We are bringing our cocker to the vet at 4:00 to be put to sleep because he is letting us know it's time. He is just laying there giving me this longing look in his eyes and I just can't take it.

I am a mess right now.

SunAngel, I had to do they same thing and when I got her to the vet's and saw her next to healthy dogs, I knew it was the right thing to do. In fact, I realized that I had hung on to her longer than I should have. I'm so sorry you're faced with that choice.

Oh I am so sorry you have to put your dog down. It's so hard to do because they are family, often like your children. I hope you are ok. I know it's hard.

Oh, I'm sorry. It's one of the most difficult and saddest times, when you have to do this. But you love your dog, and you're releasing him from misery and pain. I do believe that you will see him again.

Awww. Hugs from me too. I understand how hard that is. We're going to have to do that to one of our dogs soon too. It's a hard time to go through...

I'm so sorry - I thought you'd have a little more time together. Wingin'it's comment about seeing a dog in failing health next to healthy dogs reminded me of something similar I noticed several months after my Rosebud died. Rosebud lived to be 16 and died basically from complications of old age - severe arthritis and a heart condition.

Even know that, caring for her all day every day, I honestly did not see what poor health was doing to her. I took several pictures a few days before she unexpectedly died but didn't download them until a week or so after her death.

When I looked at the pictures, I almost felt dumbfounded - Rosebud looked so old, so frail, her whole body looked so tired...but I didn't realize all that before she was gone.

There's a saying that letting our pets go when their quality of life is such that they cannot enjoy living is the ultimate tribute we can give them - grief is a hard price to pay for love but it really does come down to doing what is best, having the wisdom and courage to understand when there aren't anymore options.

Animals don't think of time the way we do. They understand love, security, being part of a family - but they don't think about the past or worry about the future. Each day is everything to an animal and whether or not they can comfortably enjoy it is what comes together to make their lives.

I am so sorry. Hugs to you and your doggie. I once had to put a beloved cat down and although I was very sad, it was peaceful. I held her in my arms and her body just relaxed. Then the vet took her from me as I couldn't bear to bury her.
Thanks for this!

I am so sorry for your loss. I had to euthanize my dog. It is very hard to do when we love them so.

(((((SunAngel))))))) Hugs and much sympathy for you. I understand I have been there. It is so hard but in time the pain eased and I know I did what was best for my doggie. I still miss her though. My condolences.

((SunAngel)) I'm sorry that you had to part from him so soon. It's cliche and it's already been said, but he's in a better place now. You did the best thing for him.

My mom is a vet, and in one of her exam rooms she has a framed poem called "A Dog's Prayer", the last few stanzas of which I have included here:

"And, my friend, when I am very old, and
I no longer enjoy good health, hearing
and good sight, do not make heroic
efforts to keep me going.

I am not having fun. Please see that my
trusting life is taken gently. I shall
leave this earth knowing with the last
breath I drew, that my fate was always
safest in your hand."

While searching for the exact wording of this poem, I found another that I think might be comforting to you:

THE BEST PLACE TO BURY A DOG

"There is one best place to bury a dog.
"If you bury him in this spot, he will
come to you when you call - come to you
over the grim, dim frontier of death,
and down the well-remembered path,
and to your side again.

"And though you call a dozen living
dogs to heel, they shall not growl at
him, nor resent his coming,
for he belongs there.

"People may scoff at you, who see
no lightest blade of grass bent by his
footfall, who hear no whimper, people
who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them,
and which is well worth the knowing.

"The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of his master."
- Ben Hur Lampman

Your dear dog still lives on in your heart, healthy and pain-free.
Thanks for this!

I'm so sorry. How are you holding up? I know it was a hard and painful decision, but rest in the fact that you did what you felt was best for her. You were selfless in your decision.
Dogs mourn when they are no longer able to do the things they used to - it really is doing them a favour.

Give yourself time to heal, and keep busy. Do you have other animals to distract yourself with?
Thanks for this!

Thank you all so much.

The most difficult thing now is waking up in the morning without him here. We have such am empty feeling inside our hearts.

Yes, we have another dog, but he was our little boy and it feels like we lost one of our children. It will just take some time for it to become easier.

We just have to grieve our loss.

((((HUGS))))
