Hi all please can someone help me figure this out? I've tried to research as much as I can but I just end up being more confused,as always any help is always much appreciated.
I've been depressed since the age of nine,since then I've had a diagnosis of clinical depression and most recently manic depression,when I've been reading apparently this is now Bipolar. I'm due to see my psychiatrist in two weeks and I like to have a bit of knowledge before I go. So what is clinical depression?and is it different to manic depression? Also is it true that bipolar has replaced the term manic depression? I've also other mental health issues but they are mainly anxiety related and I totally understand them. I've also posted this in the depression forum for max help and advice. Please anyone? Take care JK |

Bipolar=Manic Depression.
To me, it sounds like BipolarII since you are depressed most of the time. Have you had any mania=elavated mood, feeling of eurphoria, pressured speech, unable to sit down, spending sprees with money you don't have, or irritability, agitation which=Dysphoric Mania? You have to have at least one episode of hypomania or mania to be classified as Bipolar I believe.

Clinical depression means that you meet the criteria for a depressive episode
Manic depression = bipolar and means that in addition to meeting the criteria for a depressive episode you have had at least 1 episode of mania (bipolar I) or hypomania (bipolar II) People with bipolar still get clinically depressed... but bipolar is treated differently to "unipolar" or depression without (hypo)mania. A lot of us are diagnosed as depressed for many years before our manias are noticed especially with bipolar II. The good news is that now you can get meds that will work for what is actually wrong with you... good luck with your journey!!!

I think Blackpup has done a great job outlining things for you. I was also first diagnosed with clinical depression. Try look back in your past if you can notice an episode of (hypo)mania. For diagnosis, it needs to last a week or more
