Sometimes I don't feel like I need sleep. Right now I should be sleeping but I feel happy. I heard apparently needing less sleep is a sign? I just wondered..

During hypomania and mania insomnia is a symptom, however there are other symptoms as well and dx of bipolar or hypomania for that matter are not based on one symptom alone.
Many people suffer from insomnia who are not BP or in hypomania.

Insomnia for me is a sign that I am experiencing hypomania. But insomnia effects lots of people for many different reasons.

Like others above mentioned, insomnia can indeed be a symptom for hypomania and mania. However, insomnia could occur for many other reasons as well. Oddly enough, during my worst mania I was actually sleeping decent hours, as far as mania goes! So, there are many more symptoms that make up hypomania and mania that you may want to keep an eye out for, if you think this might be what you're experiencing.

Yes not needing sleep is a sign, you need to have at least 3 symptoms from the dsm-iv guidelines for it to be considered a hypomanic or manic episode, or 4 if you are just irritable and not euphoric.

I think that not needing sleep and being HAPPY points to a possibly approaching hypomania, because a lot of insomniacs are UNhappy about their condition.
