Has anyone else experienced racing thoughts, intrusive thoughts, extreme anxiety and panic attacks at the same time? Would that be considered a mixed episode or just a manic episode? Just trying to understand.

Speaking for myself and from what my T describes is that of a " mixed episode"
for " me" But I beleive it varies between everyone .. Are these symptoms new to you ? Are you on any new medication? Or maybe need to review and possibly tweak the ones your on? As always when in doubt " call your Pdoc " Wishing you some peace and rest . |

A mixed episode has symptoms of depression and mania at the same time. You didn't mention any depressive symptoms. To me it sounds like mania/hypomania along with anxiety and panic.

What makes mixed episodes so dangerous is that you are more likely to act on your depressive thoughts (do something dangerous, drastic) when you are in a (hypo) manic state and have the associated energy/motivation. However, please don't take that as anyone here saying that what you are going through as not being serious. I'm sure this is awful for you (to say the least) and if you have a p.doc then you should try and get in touch with them as soon as possible. And don't be afraid to seek out an urgent care facility or call 911 if your thoughts become dark in any way. I can only imagine that extreme anxiety/panic mixed with mania could be every bit as bad or dangerous as a mixed episode. Please be careful and take care of yourself. Good luck. |

Intrusive thoughts could also be a psychotic symptom, just to complicate things.

I went to see my pdoc yesterday and she was under the impression that it was mania not a mixed episode. She decided to start me on lamictal, took me off risperdal and is having me wean off of the effexor. She thinks the effexor may be inducing mania-along with the stress I have been going through, which I was suspicious of myself. The first time I experienced euphoric mania was about 7 years ago when I started Effexor in the first place and that lasted a while before I came down. I am hoping all goes well with my med changes. I am feeling pretty good today, no anxiety or intrusive thoughts. feeling pretty clear headed. yay!

Yes, I experience this on a regular basis. This is one of my primary symptoms, actually. My racing thoughts often cause my anxiety as I'm trying to think clearly and I can't, so I panic. I forget things constantly, make many mistakes, my ability to read comes and goes (due to inability to focus on one thought.) It also causes me to have pressured speech.
Intrusive thoughts are worse, because I have irritability and racing thoughts, and intrusive thoughts. I often am also fatigued and feeling hopeless/helpless. This is when I am most likely to have suicidal ideation. My last doc told me that is a strong indicator of mixed state. |
