I was wondering any bad side effects it may have had. I have just been diagnosed with Bipolar I soo I have only taken anti-depressants(which obviously didn't work) I'm not sure how exactly I'll feel and if it will make me feel better instantly or worse before better or anything. I'm happy to know whats wrong but its kind of scary actually having something legit wrong. (especially when your mother thinks your just a moody person) So i'm nervous hoping someone can help. I'm getting the script filled tmm.

I just gave my p-doc nurse my Saphris back. I took it for 4 days (once in her office) and became very ill from it. I hope you got the flavored kind as it really tastes aweful and you can't eat or drink anything for 10 minutes after. It was some of the longest 10 minutes of my life. I don't say any of this to scare you! Just telling you my experience with it. I wish I could have 'waited it out' as I'm sure it would have been a big help to me. I, like you, spent many years on anti-d's which threw me into many manic episodes. I'm now on 300mg of Lamictal a day and for the most part this has helped more than anything else I've tried. I wish you the best and please let us know how you're doing.

yep i heard it taste nasty and i'm getting the flavored kind I have read some posts on other site. Some peopl eeither love it or hate it. I'm hoping i love it. I feel more anxious and to hear Bipolar made sense. but i don't like hear voices and stuff like ALOT of people that have been put on it. Its for Schizophrenia as well so I'm hoping it doesn't make me feel crazier. That would totally suck

Hi! And firstly, welcome!

The thing about meds is that they can be so different for everyone. What's great for one person isn't for another, so...

Totally get your nervousness though! AND having been misdiagnosed and having been prescribed straight ADs. Hello dancing on the counters in the middle of the night(!)...

As with any med, there's been a range of experience here with Saphris. It really is best to see how something works for you as an individual.

Tattoogirl's post reminds me about the flavor thing. I did have the flavored kind (black cherry I think it was). The taste thing didn't bother me at all. If you've ever had that throat numbing spray Chloroseptic, it kind of has that feel, but over a lesser area.

Let us know how it goes for you!

(Edited to add: Oh, don't worry about it being an atypical anti-psychotic and used for schizophrenia as well. Atypical APs are simply a class of medicine. They're used for a range of things, despite their name, which tends to scare people a bit.)

I took it for at least a year and I'd have to say that the worst part was the taste. When I first started taking it, it would knock me out. Within half an hour I was out but that went away after a while. It also made my mouth a little numb.

p.s

I saw your other post about how expensive it is. OMG I know. I saw the little paper that says "insurance saved you:" and the amount was riduculous. I have Tricare through the military so I'm truly blessed that it was very cheap for me. Ask your doctor if he/she has samples though, i think a lot of times they do. Good luck!!

Hey,

I was on Saphris for several months using the Black Cherry flavor. To be honest, I felt nothing at all on it. I was neither manic nor psychotic while taking, which, I suppose, is a good thing given the fact that I was completely off the wall before I was prescribed it. What helped me the most was the Lamictal. I swear by that drug. As soon as my pdoc upped the dose from 50mg to 100mg I felt the effect immediately--no kidding.

As for Saphris being prescribed for Schizophrenics, it can be at high doses--20mg a day, I think. It is also used to treat Bipolar at lower doses; I was taking 10mg a day sub-lingual, and, no, it will not make you crazy

I wish I can say more, but I really can't. It just wasn't for me. I didn't have any side effects or negative reactions to it, yet I don't think it was aiding my Bipolar. And, yes, it is EXTREMELY expensive. I didn't have insurance for several months and forked out nearly $600 for two months supply and that was with a discount card.

I was recently switched from Saphris to Sequerol and I totally feel the effects of Sequerol. It makes me less paranoid/anxious, keeps the depression at bay and puts a lid on the mania pretty tightly.

Good luck with the Saphris (be sure to get the Black Cherry flavor) and keep us posted!

This is just my opinion... but if you are not going to be able to afford the med, why even start it. Why not start on something you can afford. Your pdoc won't be able to supply you with the med on a monthly basis. I would talk to my doctor about switching meds right away. What good does it do even if it helps you if you can't afford to buy it.
