Feeling somewhat stable is kind of boring. ( I do have to say that I am grateful for how I feel)

What do you do when you are feeling stable and have nothing to do. I can't drive because of ECT, so I am stuck locally. Coffee shops are too far away to walk to, and so are the playgrounds. I have my 5 year old and my 10 year old to entertain. The mall is too far away to walk, so no shopping or movies. Public transport is a pain and I am still afraid to use the bus or a taxi anyway.

Anyway, any suggestions?

If the weather improves, my parents will pick me up to go to the pool at their house. So far it has been either too cold or too rainy.

I just don't want to fall into a pattern of boredom which will lead to depression.

Read to them? I bet even if you read at the 10-y-o's level, the 5-y-o will listen.
Thanks for this!

Why don't you drive? I have ECT every 3 to 4 weeks. Once the anesthesia wears off - late afternoon - I am allowed to drive. Did someone tell you that you couldn't drive while having a series of ECT?

Yes, the people at the ECT clinic said that I couldn't drive throughout the course of treatment, even on off days, and for two weeks after the treatment is over.

There's a difference between having ECT every other day and having maintenance every few weeks. Every other day is more intensive and the memory loss and disorientation can be a larger issue. You don't want to find out in retrospect that you don't know how to find your way home, for instance.
Thanks for this!

lol at the opening statement. It's so true. hamster-bamster has kinda suggested what I would have suggested. I'm a huge bookworm myself and when there's nothing else to do, I read! Or I rummage my stack of DVDs for a nice movie that goes with my mood. Since you have two kids to entertain, playing with them doesn't sound like a bad idea either. Idk...

Do you have a yard where you can play with the kids? Taking the kids out in the yard is always good exercise. Just let them run around and get the wiggles out. Or take a ball, trucks, etc. If you don't have a yard you could build a fort out of blankets and chairs. Kids love that! Or you can go on "adventure walks." You make up a story like you're a group of scientists and you need to go on an expedition to examin the local nature in your neighborhood. It not only gets you out of the house, but it works their imagination and can be educational, too.

When you have someone to take you, go to the dollar store and stock up on art and craft supplies. Dollar Tree (the one that is absolutely one dollar) has lots and lots of arts and crafts, water colors, coloring books, markers, paper, etc. My older boys recently made their room into the "Secret Agent" headquarters and painted a bunch of signs to hang on the door that say stuff like "Keep Out, Secret Angent Headquarters."

Those are my "the kids are bored and I'm going to pull my hair out" strategies.

I know when I was a kid, my mom, my brother and I would make up skits and film them. We have a video where I am a wizard turning my brother into a dragon (stuffed animal of course) and making popcorn with the dragon's breath. It was kinda fun. Even fun to watch as an adult.

Good point. I am having maintenance and I just assumed this was maintenance. When I have had the initial treatments of 3x a week I have been hospitalized. They don't want to do it outpatient especially since i live alone.

I know I have been sending out inquiries on VolunteerMatch.org for a home based virtual volunteer position, and I may have a bite. I'm just waiting to hear back. i think it's important to be able to be useful to society in some way if it's at all possible which I don't know if this will work out or not at this point. I'm just hoping. Anyway, maybe that is something you could do. Check out the site and do a search for virtual opportunities.
