I essentially got hired to waitress next month.

Im really nervous about screwing stuff up. Its not hard because its a hotdog joint but Im still really nervous.

I dont have a problem with talking to people, just messing up on the cash register.

I understand how you feel. I get so scattered I'm always nervous that I'm making mistakes.

I've never waitressed so I have no advice in that area.

I have a short-term memory because of Lithium.

I hope it becomes really habitual for me, otherwise I'm screwed.

I also realized I'm going to have to learn a bunch of peoples names. (Like the regulars)

gah

I don't think I'll be doing any of the food prep, thankfully.

Haha Confused, I swear when people have a bad memory they sometimes revert to calling everyone Hun, Dear, or Sweetie . Or some people just like doing it. I can't pull that off, but I can pull off a convincing " hey you!", even strangers think they must know me . I think you will do great, you might make a few mistakes here and there but who doesn't at a new job. Your smart, and I'm sure you work hard.

Congrats on the new job! And just remember that everyone feels nervous at a new place of employment, but it soon passes.
Thanks for this!

Confused ,

I can understand your worries .. Please try to relax .. everyone feels this way with any kind of new employment.

Deep breathe Deep breathe Deep breathe

And if something does go haywire ... Just laugh it off and know you wont be the first one to make a mistake nor the last !

Good luck and I bet you will really enjoy this

and don't worry, 1st day nerves are understandable. Cash registers seem intimidating, but in my experience, easy to understand and get the hang of as it's a repetitive process. Congratz, and let us know how it went!

I notice alot of store people shopkeepers need to concentrate when they do the transaction handle the money side of the deal.

all the social bit is cool I guess but I don't do that much anyway while they are busy

...thing is I let the worker take their time to punch the buttons swipe the cards count the dollars and coins and when they are ready then I'm on my way and if they make a mistake then it's ok too.

some people are just pricks and it only takes one to make you feel like a nervous wreck for the rest of the day!....and even longer.

my nerves are used and abused and got no choice but to tell people ..."just hold on a sec....or give me a minute please"

cash machines are complicated these days maybe get a chance to practice on it when nobody is around?...there is a practice mode on them yep

Good Luck. Cash registers aren't that hard. I had to learn to use on for my new job. Just make sure you give people the right change.

Don't worry about learning names, they'll come to you. Took me like 6 weeks to learn names when I was a waitress.

Just remember to smile.

Well, Confused, maybe carry a note pad with you and write down the orders. I have terrible working memory. I forget what people tell me almost instantly. That can get me in trouble. O.O The difference between working memory and short term memory is that if your working memory is bad it never makes it into the "save" so you never have a chance to remember it to start with.

As for names, that's something either your good at or not. I remember names and faces pretty well. I'm good with people. But tell me to remember to pick up milk at the store and I'll forget unless I write it down.

As with anything... it's never as bad as we make it out to be. Just hang in there and make it through that first day. You'll be great at it!
