Hello all, as some of you know I just got out of the hospital not to long ago but my doctor changed my meds up drastically and risperdal is one of my news ones as Abilify/lamictal combo caused me almost continuous anxiety attacks that he called akathesia, Idk Im still on cogentin for it but the severity is much less. Anyway I have heard a lot about risperdal and weight gain, so since Im a big guy I now have to watch what i eat even more, but i notice Im not as hungry as usual so can this medication also cause weight loss? That would be fantastic. Also what other symptoms should I be aware of. I like this medication better because it is cheaper, and less problems with Akathesia. Just hope this medication can cause weight loss.

Do not know about the weight gain but please make sure your doctor checks your levels. I ended up in the emergency room with low white blood , low platlets and something else wrong all related to risperdal.
They took me right off.

I developed Parkinson-like symptoms. I moved ever so slowly (and I am normally a fast, energetic walker) and I thought that it was because of deep situational depression, but it was a side effect of Risperdal. It probably could have been managed with cogentin, but I opted for switching to Geodon instead, and Geodon works great (except for the orgasm thingie).

I also had horrible acne and in general very low energy. I was on disability at the time. I do not think I would be able to pull off work while being on Risperdal, but on Geodon, I can. Thanks Geodon.
Thanks for this!

I hope it makes you personally lose weight.
The nimh website can probably tell you what you want to know about side effects.
I did badly on it. It made me a zombie, I could not think, I had no drive to do anything,
I felt almost locked inside myself. And then there was the whole my body thinks I'm pregnant thing
where I gained weight that looked exactly like a growing baby.
Don't want to scare you, if it works for you that's awesome :-)
Thanks for this!

Risperdal was good for me, no weight gain or loss but I got high prolactin levels from it.

i put on a good bit of weight with rispiridol (not sure if it was the drug or my eating habits changed) but it was quite easy to lose and the weight fell off me quickly.

Didn't have any side effects except elevated prolactin levels, and it did its job.

So far Risperidone 1mg daily has not given me any bad side effects save for nasal congestion.

I take 1 mg a day and it has really helped. If I take more than 1.5 mg. I get very tired. The higher dosage does make me more hungry but I only take more if I am in a mixed state and need help. Good luck!

I should add that my Parkinson-line symptoms developed at a high dose - 6 mg. At 1 mg, I felt mighty good, too.

What else are you taking Clinte? Abilify gave me the akathesia thing, that sucked. Risperdal, they gave it to my son at age 11, and he gained quite a bit of wait for a skinny boy. He's 16 now and growing a left breast.... he's still skinny, but it's puffy on the left side and I'm freaked out. So now I understand those law firm commercials on tv about adolescent boys growing breasts from taking risperdal, and should probably make a call. My understanding is that this doesn't happen to adults who take it.

"moobs" lol ty i needed a chuckle... feeling better can bring about a lot of life changes, like wanting to get active. Lithium has made me feel better, and drink a lot more water which I'm sure is good for me and help with weight loss. I just don't want to lose my boobs, but it always happens when I lose weight, boobs get a bit smaller. Oh well, healthy is the real goal, right?
