I think I had my second-ever auditory hallucination last night. The first one was a number of years ago where I kept hearing the music of my cell phone ring over and over. I held my phone in my hand and could see there was no incoming call, but I heard the tune play over and over. It didn't get softer if I covered my ears, and even when my husband or I spoke, I could hear it and sing right along with it where it was in the tune. It was strange, but it was not frightening and I just finally ignored it and it went to bed and slept. I hadn't thought about that experience in a very long time.
Last night after I took my lamictal (I'm up to 100 mg, just increased dose this past weekend), I sat in bed and started hearing heavy rain and the sound my gutters make as the water hits it and the water rapidly falls out the bottom. I got up and went outside (because I didn't think heavy rain was in the forecast) and sure enough, it wasn't raining at all. Hot and muggy out. The sound I heard was unique to the sound of heavy rain and the gutters; I'm sure it wasn't my AC, water in the house or yard or anything else that I was mistaking for rain. My husband said he heard nothing and even went all over inside and out and said he didn't hear anything. Like the experience a number of years ago, the sound didn't decrease if I covered my ears, which is what really convinced me it must have been an auditory hallucination. I guess I'm lucky that it wasn't voices or anything that would scare me. It was just peaceful heavy rain and the sound of it hitting my gutters. I turned a loud air filter on to be white noise in my room and turned off the light and was able to go to sleep. Today I didn't experience it at all. I don't know how to explain such a random auditory hallucinations. Of course it will be mentioned at my next apt. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this sort of thing where it isn't voices, but just music or basic sounds that aren't frightening. Is this a bipolar symptom? I looked at the lamictal paper that came with the Rx and it didn't look like it would cause this sort of side effect. I'm not sure other than the bipolar or the medication would explain this sort of thing. Any input? |

I used to hear organ music when I was on higher doses of seroquel. Not a tune I knew or even much of a tune at all. Same 6 or 7 notes repeating. Not every night, but frequently enough that I learned to ignore it.
Don't know if it's a common side effect but it is gone now that I am on a lower dose. |

Ok now I'm getting nervous. Hope it's not my Seroquel. I do from time to time feel like someone is behind me and I look and nothing. Just a few times I thought I saw something I knew wasn't there. Thank goodness it doesn't happen that often. Every time I went thru this I was extremely stressed out.

Oh crap, didn't realize that things like that were auditory hallucinations. I would call your pdoc and ask.

Well actually I don't know. I thought they were, but maybe they aren't. (Not sure if you are talking about the Seroquel thing or what I experienced. Either way, I'm not sure.)

If you can't find the source of the sound and it sounds really real like its there close by, its probably a hallucination. I've had them. Try to not let them scare you.

I used to have them all the time too. I never knew why and honestly I thought everyone did it so I didn't worry about it.
But it doesn't happen anymore since I was diagnosed and started taking meds so I guess it was an hallucination. __________________ Success in not final; Failure is not fatal; It is the courage to continue that counts. Winston Churchill |

If it isn't alarming you, and isn't accompanied by other warning signs of psychosis, e.g. Paranoia, confusion, or people telling you your beliefs are way off track, you may have nothing to worry about. Many people experience such things without being psychotic.
But I have been hearing that sort of thing for years and it really intensified before I began hearing clear voices. The most amazing sounds were from an orchestra playing loudly in the middle of the night. I got suspicious when I found I could control what they played by thinking. That was during a manic episode. __________________ Life is like a storm with millions of eyes. So deceptive.
