I am so, so, so happy that I haven't watched the clock for the past two nights, 6 hrs. and 7 hrs respectively. It just took trazedone and klonopin.

Now for my poor son-his isn't falling asleep until 3 or after and he has to start school on Monday. He takes melatonin, but otherwise I don't know what to do for him. I don't want any sleep aids prescribed because he is too young (12).

Glad to here you are sleeping again!!

Have you had your son checked over for any other problems that could cause insomnia, or sleep disorders? My insomnia started around that age too. My mom gave me herbal sleep aide's but they never did work for me. Melatonin actually makes me more alert and wired too.

maybe some white or pink noise when he is lying in bed might help? It's frustrating, my 11 year old son also has insomnia.

happy you're sleeping blue. the docs don't want to give sleep meds to kids, i know about that one. they recommend benadryl... which you wouldn't want for the long run

Yes, my son is also diagnosed. He's on the bipolar spectrum but he's diagnosed with a mood disorder. The doctors won't give a the bp label yet.
He takes prozac and abilify, morning and night. I wonder if either of these drugs that he takes before going to bed help to keep him awake? Has anyone had this problem? I will talk to his pdoc next week if he has a rough time with the start of school.

Melatonin makes me feel weird and wired too, like being a kid at a babysitters and not wanting to sleep in a strange place. It's more fun to get up and pretend their closets lead to Narnia.

Prozac gave me the most brilliant insomnia. Of course, that might have been the mania...hahaha. Though insomnia is a listed side effect and Prozac is said to be one of the most, if not the most, stimulating of all the SSRIs.

Thanks for the info, cocoabeans. I will ask about a different schedule for taking meds. Maybe he's grown enough now to take all of the prozac at once.

Abilify and prozac both caused insomnia in me. could be a possibility, maybe check the prozac first.

From what I have read, Prozac should be taken in the morning. Glad your sleep has returned!

When I took prozac I always took it in the morning, but maybe because he's only 12, he needs to split it up.

On a side note: I think it is Mark Harmon who is doing an info commercial on bipolar. My son and I were watching tv tonight and it came on. He talked about mood changes among other things-you may have seen it. Anyway, when he mentioned the mood changes, my son said, "That's the truth!" Sometimes I feel so guilty for all he experiences.

I'm in the same boat with my youngest. She has no diagnosis, but she is my little mirror image. There is not much doubt that she will be just like me

Yes, but at least she will be granted a father who understands and can help guide her, that's a lot.
Thanks for this!
