I've been on risperdal 1mg along with lithium 1200mg and paxil 60mg for about three years prior to that I took 3mg of risperdal for about two years. I have had massive weight gain (100+lbs) and only recently found out risperdal can cause excessive weight gain. I've also noticed it seems lately to be sapping my energy and making me really sleepy.

Has anyone had any experience with risperdal and specifically these side effects? Any input appreciated.

Yes, I had low energy, but at much high dosages - 6 mg. At 1 mg I was OK with energy. I had a host of other unpleasantries - Parkinson-like side effects, unorgasmia, horrendous acne... I guess that would be all. I personally did not have weight gain.

I am certainly never going back on Risperdal, ever.

Twiddle, for weight loss, I have tried walking, swimming, and biking, and biking is by far the best. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for your response and suggestion, Hamster-Bamster. I can't bike because I'm too obese and have emphysema. I have to wear oxygen at all times so everything's out for me besides walking. I weigh about 285 and am only 5'4. I was about 150lbs when I started on the risperdal which is why I wondered if anyone else had had a similar problem with it. I need to get some of the weight off because it's starting to take a toll on my joints, especially my knees which are arthritic.

Well for starters your Pdoc or whoever that has just left you on a medication that was causing you such weight gain should be shot.. Since shooting them isn't legal I would suggest an appt with whomever and figure out a new treatment plan. There are weight neutral options to try.

Sorry you are dealing with this.

I totally agree with Morethingswrong regarding shooting the doctor who allowed the massive weight gain in a patient who physically cannot exercise. For arthritic knees, the best activity is swimming, but you cannot, with the oxygen tank!

I put weight on with lithium so maybe that is adding to the problem too. Agree about the pdoc needing a kick up the butt or worse.

Yes. In my experience as a psych nurse (and I am also bp) Lithium causes weight gain. So does Risperdal. I am not certain about Paxil.
