This is a bit of a weird one... The nauseas not from my meds but from my pregnancy but I get nauseous at night when it's time to take my meds and just can't handle taking them. Also some nights I vomit after I've taken them from the nausea and waste the meds.
Anyone have any ideas of how to get around this one? I'm getting really worried cos I'm missing one or two doses a week which can't be good for drug levels. Please give me any advice you can think of. I'm really trying to be med compliant this year but I just can't handle taking them or eating or drinking anything when I feel this sick.
I asked my pdoc but he didn't have any suggestions except to say that I should take them - I know that but it doesn't help me actually take them!

Which meds are they? Do they absolutely need to be taken at night because they are so sedating? If you can't move all of them, could you move some? Your OB might be a better resource on problem-solving strategies than pdoc. I know some women are rx'd anti nausea meds if it is too severe.

Bummer that you still have nausea. You must almost be into the third trimester by now, no? Some women are unlucky with that sort of thing, I guess.

Best,
EJ
Thanks for this!

Thanks EJ. I'm at 24 weeks. My nausea went from every day before 12 weeks to a couple of times a week at the moment. My meds say to take them at night because they can be sedating. I don't think I get sedated from them but worry about taking them in the morning coz of car insurance purposes. (Over here if you make a claim you have to declare if you have taken any sedating meds in the last 12 hours) I guess if they are not sedating to me then the answer is no! Maybe I should ask the pharmacist. They know more about meds than most doctors... (And they are free!)

Meds can be really person specific, so just because other people find them sedating doesn't mean you will. If they aren't intended to induce sleep, it is probably worth a try. Or how about taking them at dinner time before the nausea starts? That way if you are a little drowsy, you don't have to be out and about. And they will have a little time to move through your system if you would end up vomiting later.

Let us know how it goes!
EJ

Patients who experience nausea from chemo are prescribed Marinol which is a non-mind-altering drug derived from marijuana. It is effective, but expensive.

I get nausea with migraines so my anti-migraine medicine, imitrex, comes in the form of a nasal spray. It also comes in the form of injections but I prefer the nasal spray. Non-GI route is the ultimate solution for your problem. Unfortunately, only a few psych drugs are inje, tables, such as risperdal once every two weeks.
Thanks for this!

Thanks hammy. Good to see u back around. I can't take risperidal cos it elevates my prolactin. My boobs are big enough!!! There are some other anti nausea drugs I could try like olanzapine which are ok in pregnancy but its a month till my next pdoc visit or my next obstetric appt.

Olanzapine, called Zyprexa in the US, would most likely lead to weight gain, so be careful. Juust by way of a warning and other than that it is an awesome drug.

I am also glad to see you!

Cant you get an anti- nausea drug OTC? thats what I did... Or get them from gp's. Beats waiting for a specialist.

I like to check interactions with my pdoc and I'm pregnant so I can't take everything.

Thats why a pharmacist would be your best bet. You get a pregnancy specific med, and he could advise if there would be any chance of interaction with your psych meds, I doubt it tho, stomach meds shouldn't interfere with brain meds, but I understand why you are cautious...

Anti nausea drugs are often seratonin antagonists (decrease the amount of seratonin) which would be bad for depression where you are trying to increase the serotonin. (That's why some antidepressants make you nauseous when you first take them) some anti nausea drugs act locally in the stomach and others act centrally in the brain
Regardless, tripping you are right, I'll see the pharmisist today when I pick up my meds. Thanks - good thinking.
