My girlfriend saw a psychiatrist today and he rx'd Paxil to help treat her extreme anxiety. She is unsure whether she wants to take it.

Could those who have used it please give me all your sucess stories, horror stories, side effects, etc you have experienced with this drug so I can help her make an informed decision about taking this medication.

Any input you could give would be greatly appreciated

My motto has always been take it cause the docs not gonna hurt you intentionally and the worse that can happen is you feel bad for a few hours. But anyway my dad takes it and love it says it keeps him from over thinking things, which is alot of what anxiety is. Well that's my .02

I took Paxil before my Bipolar dx ( pre-mood stabilizer) and it caused severe mania and then the worst depression I ever experienced.

Maybe post in the anxiety or general meds section? You are likely to hear less positive things on the BP board due to our diagnoses.

intentionally? Maybe not. But there's negligience. There's pharma money.

Yes, there goes Venus again with "doctors suck"... but you shouldn't trust them 100%. Me and my mom sued doctors over negligience case (prescribing anti-biotic which person had allergic reaction to before... because he forgot his notebook with him). Fun fact? The doctor is still working and there had been more cases of him handing out random med, without caring for possible contraindications or side effects.

so my advice? JUst because doc prescribe it doesn't mean it will be okay. SIde effects can last more then few hours, sadly. Know the side effects, not to freak yourself out, but to know what to do and what is serious and what is not. It can save a freaking life to be aware.
