I was wondering if anyone has had bad reactions to different foods with your meds. A couple of times a year, I'll get these awful bouts of vomiting and stomach distress out of nowhere, and have always wondered if something I ate didn't mix with my meds.

I know there are certain foods that should not be eaten while on certain meds. For example, I can't eat grapefruit. I have been diagnosed with IBS, but it's tame now. But I can't say I've ever associated stomach woes with meds. That's not to say it hasn't happened.

Anyone?

All I ever hear about is Grapefruit in regards to food interactions with meds. It seems to have a certain quality that either decreases or increases the bioavailability of a lot of medications.

Mostly I see recommendations to eat food/a snack with the medication either to relieve nausea or increase absorption.

Have you tried looking at the possible side effects of the medications you take? Sometimes they will reveal any reactions to foods, although not often. It is probably just an idiosyncratic reaction you're having, but one
that you need to question, in my view, with your psychiatrist if the symptoms don't resolve themselves pretty rapidly.

A major problem that is emergencing through knowledge now about foods and some bipolar patients (those who are sensitive to it) is wheat. It contains exorphins in the gluten which act on the opiate centers of the brain and can cause many forms of illness for some, as well as addiction.

There are foods you can't have with certain meds. I know some antibiotics you can't have too much calcium with them. Ask your pharmacist if there are any food reactions to the meds you take.
