I have an appliance guy coming out tomorrow to replace the drum in the dryer. It's the second new drum being replaced as the previous new replaced drum was manufactured off balance. My question is do I tip a second time being that the problem wasn't rectified the first time? I tipped the first time as everything seemed okay until a day later and now he has to come back.
This is actually the second guy to come out (once with Ed, twice with Angel). Ed replaced parts and things were quiet so I tipped him. The next day the noise came back so now Angel came by and said the only thing left to do was to replace the drum and a belt tensioner and I will basically have a new machine as the are no other parts to be replaced sans a new machine. So Angel put in the new drum and belt tensioner in and everything was quiet again, so I tipped Angel. The next day a different noise came back of which was due to a poorly manufactured drum. Tomorrow Angel will be by to put in the new drum. So, do I tip Angel again because he has to install another drum because the previous poorly manufactured drum wasn't his fault or do I NOT tip because I tipped Angel before and the job still isn't complete? I'm really bad with money so any advice would be appreciated. |

I would say you've tipped enough. I don't think they usually expect a tip and since you already tiped him. I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't tip him you did already. I also don't think they expect tips. They get a salary it's not like waitresses who really solely on tips. I would only do it again if it was a really difficult job for him and he went above and beyond

I've never heard of tipping repairmen either. As 16THDOCTOR pointed out, they receive a salary. The reason one tips waiters/waitresses is because they generally don't receive minimum wage -- their livlyhood depends on tips.

+1 from me. Repairmen, telephone company technicians, electric and gas company technicians who make house calls all receive decent wages.

Well, the consensus is in... no tipping repairmen!
Thanks everyone! |

It is not just the consensus, but pretty much everybody was very surprised that you would go to that length. Can you give us a list of everybody whom you tip and maybe we can prune it for you?

I only ever tip at restaurants and only if I'm in a good mood and feeling like I have money to waste. Waitresses get at least min wage here anyway.

You do not tip hairdressers in Canada?

I'm sure some people do but, I don't. I don't make that much money so, I don't like to give it away without a proper reason.
