I went to my Primary Doctor because I had pain going down my arm and had 2 fingers numb. He thought it was inflamation that was pinching on a nerve. He gave me a 12 day prednisone pack. By day 3 it hit me. I was aggitated, angry, nervous, not sleeping. I went 3 days with only about 2 hours of sleep per night. I ended up in a Mental Health Hospital. This is going on 32 days, and I am still trying to get stabilized. I felt like there was nothing I could do, there were no triggers or stresses to take away or deal with. I was a mess. I'm still a mess. Thank God for my parents. Has anyone else had any other medication set them off like this?

i'm bp2 with no depression. i had to be hospitalized for a week w/crohn's/colitis issues and i was given pred. i.v. and on pred. pills for 3 mo. thereafter...most horrid mania/ocd/insomnia ever. also tried some antidepressants and they flipped me into mania...and lastly, over-the counter allergy meds or anything which says `non drowsy' set me off. i always ask a pharmacist which over-the-counter works for someone w/mania.

Wellbutrin is the reason the term 'psychotic' appears in my medical record. That stuff turned me into a raging, manic biatch from Hell.......I didn't even realize it until my first pdoc appointment when he asked me about ADs I'd used in the past, and I described the reaction I had. I've certainly been hypomanic on other ADs, but WB damn near cost me my job and the respect of my co-workers. It's on my allergies list. Thank goodness!

Yes, I took a 5-day taper of prednisone once and had a week of hypomania. It didn't go into full-blown mania, thankfully, maybe because it was only 5 days of meds. I'm so sorry it's taking so long to get out of this episode, it sounds awful. I learned the hard way -as you have- that I just can't take steroids. I wish you the best, I hope you can stabilize soon!

Over a decade ago I was prescribed Wellbutrin to quit smoking by my PCP (I don't think it's used for that anymore) and it sent me into mania. First and last time I hallucinated, amongst other things. I've heard this about Wellbutrin from a couple of others on here, I think it's really activating and should never be prescribed if there's any suspicion of bipolar -they have to be more careful with that drug!!
Thanks for this!

Unfortunately, no one had the slightest idea I was bipolar at that time (although in retrospect, I realize now that I've probably always had it) and I was seeing only my primary care doctor. Paxil had pooped out on me, and I wanted to try something different......well, NOW I know why the Paxil pooped out, and why Prozac hadn't worked before that. My PCP referred me to a psychiatrist when he realized my mental-health issues were beyond his ability to treat. I was thoroughly offended and told him "I'm not crazy, Doc, I've just had really bad mood swings all my life!". But I went, and I've thanked him a thousand times for recognizing that he couldn't help me any more.

Pristiq did. But I only realized this in retrospect. I now realize that the most reckless summer of my adult life happened after that. So many high risk situations that had the potential to really hurt myself with crazy irrational behavior. Also just a little over a month ago my pdoc decided to put me on Effexor as I was having a lot of anxiety and a little depressed. I didn't go straight manic but I had a lot of the good things that came with it. I felt better bout myself, thought I was awesome, had tons of energy working out, but also old bad habits pop up and I'm not eating, driving kind of risky and doing some light unneeded shopping. So I stopped it at pdocs request.
Saw her today and more med changes are on the horizon so ill let you know off these new ones have any similar effects.

I have it was that f!@ing Celexa. I'm not bitter abt can't you tell. Basically I was misdiagnosed w/ depression and given Celexa. After I became manic I was correctly diagnosed w/ BP 1. During an episode I went off on a nurse at my PCP's office. I late apologized for going off, however I was still let go.
They referred me to a pdoc.
