So at my job we're redesigning our classes. We're reworking everything in our folders with new handouts etc. I am a big part of this this time, which is awesome. We've already done it once before since I've been here. The knowledge about diabetes and how treatments work or new treatments is always changing. It's recommended that you update your education every five years.

So.... one of the big things they asked me to do is to create a handout about diabetes and depression. They asked me because they said I am very knowledgable on the subject of depression. Well, I would think maybe I am. Ego boost!

So, I just finished the handout and e-mailed it for approval to my boss. I made sure to add things in there like: "Most people think that depression is just a form of sadness. However; depression affects much more than a person's mood or emotions." And then listing off things people struggle with like concentration, making decisions, and wanting to take care of youself. You know, stuff I know from experience.

So... uhm... I guess this is my sneaky way to fight stigma. Mwahahaha. Because, once in our class folders, my handout will be given to all of our patients in class. That's around 1,000 patients a year plus all their spouses or friends they bring with them. And, if the handout is really good, the educators will also use it to give to people here on individual appointments.

They never would have let me do this even last year. Ever since I almost died last year my boss has a new appreciation for me. I think that two weeks without me really showed her exactly how much I do every day.

You're very fortunate, DH. I didn't get any appreciation whatsoever when I was out for two weeks......all I got when I went back was a "see you later" and a final paycheck. Glad you work for more understanding folks!

Well, I was out because I had to have emergency gallbladder surgery and then I had pancreatitus. I almost ended up in the ICU. This was last July. One of the educators, after hearing my story, was shocked and said, "Oh my god, you could have died." But luckily, I went to hospital by ambulance thinking it was a heart attack. That was last July and I still get sick pretty regularly, not with pancreatitus, but with after effects of having a gallbladder out.

I bet if I'd had to go for an episode they would have fired me. At the time I only had 12 days on my FMLA because I'd had my baby 6 months before and used almost all my time. So, the HR person was threatening to fire me if I didn't get back ASAP. I went back to work before I was able to walk more than 10 feet without pain and getting winded. But I was scared to lose my job. I even lied to the surgion that I felt okay so that he would clear me. So I just sat at my desk a lot.

Funny joke, but experience at work not so much. I can relate! But it's nice to hear when it works for someone now and then, like Dark Heart. Unfortunately, that's not been my experience, either. . .

My boss hasn't reviewed the handout yet. She let me know she looked at it briefly and asked "wasn't it so and so's job to make it?" I told her I thought it was assigned to me, so I had made it. She thanked me for doing it. My co-worker who she thought was doing it is very nice but not creative and hates doing handouts anyway. She dreads doing it.

I then told her how I'm helping with the other handouts assigned to that co-woker. They were a mess! Then I said how I've already completed the rivsion of class 1 and my boss was very impressed. Then she said, "Maybe you shoudl just make all the handouts from now on."

Yes! Please! The whole office suite is now down due to a problem here at work. Otherwise I'd be happily making more handouts right now.

Okay, so I have an update on this.

My boss was finally able to go over all of the handouts I made, including the one about depression and diabetes. She called me into her office and was going over fixes, changes, etc.

So, she gets to the depression handout and she says "This is really great. Did you copy it from somewhere?"

And I said, no.

And she was like, "This is really good, the only thing we need to do is find the statistical number about the occurance of depression in diabetes."

Good Job DH!!! Glad you are getting the accolades you deserve! I never did well in office settings. I'm not competitive at all. I just wanted to do my job and go home. No Tupperware parties or girls night out with people at work. I was never at a job long enough to want to make friends and I didn't want to have to make a commitment to social events. That's why I started cleaning houses by myself! I don't get panic attacks so much when I'm alone.

I hope she gives you a huge raise at your next performance review! And great that you'll have the opportunity to make more handouts. It is good she is using your talents to contribute in a positive way for your company.
