I don't know his diagnosis but the dr said his hallucinations would just get worse and soon he wouldn't be able to function. Was this to scare him? He'd told the dr that he'd quit his meds. I think the diagnosis right now is psychosis nos with possible pschizo but he doesn't have the social withdrawal ive read about. I'm scared. I have to dole out his meds now.

My son recently went through a psychotic episode and the psychiatrist labeled it psychosis nos. I have bipolar myself and if he has to have a mental illness I would prefer he have that rather than schizophrenia. My son seems to be doing moderately well. He is functioning and working. Just extra quiet. I know how horrible it is to go through this with your child. Blessings on you as you go through this!

The doctor was putting it clearly to the boy, in my view, Moose. Off his medications,
schizophrenia (if that's what it is) will probably get worse. Be sure he takes those medications. Incidentally, Dr. David Williams* tells about a woman at Duke University Hospital who had been a long-term resident there as a schizophrenic. They took all grains out of her diet and she recovered completely---was released as having been cured. I'm not saying it would work for your son, but if there's a chance that it might improve his diagnosis and help him, I'd try it for a couple of months, if I were in your shoes. You can always substitute seeds, nuts, and more green vegetables to counteract the amino acids he would be missing by eliminating grains (especially wheat, barley, and rye which contain gluten). It's a chemical in gluten called exorphins that act on opiate receptors in the brain and are addictive that need to be removed if it's going to work for him. Brown rice is good as a substitute, too. I feel sure it doesn't work for everyone, but it's like the "lemon thing" I talk about; it may work for some of us. Take care and try not to worry; your son's psychiatrist will be ready for any event that could occur, and with you in charge of his meds, that's not likely to occur. Chances are he'll be better than ever with your guidance. _____________________________ *Dr. David Williams book entitled "Wheat Belly" (A New York Best Seller this year) |

Thanks. But the other part of this is that his dad doesn't know he's on meds. And last time meds were only suggested -never taken- he was against them. I dunno what to do. He rarely sees his dad.

Moose, either you or your son is going to have to let the father know that the psychiatrist feels it is imperative that your son take the medications or suffer a more severe situation than he has right now. Surely the man is smart enough to recognize that a specialist's directive is to be taken seriously. Both you and your son will be stronger for having faced the reality of the situation with the boy's father. Just take a deep breath and let it flow to him so that he understands the doctor's orders are to be followed until or unless the father wants to go in to talk to the psychiatrist and provide special residency for your son in a psychiatric hospital until he is able to function in life reasonably well. This should not be on your shoulders alone, Moose. You're doing admirably, and the father is best out of the picture unless he has a positive contribution to make for his son's remission or recovery. |

He thinks talk therapy alone will work. Maybe the dr we last saw would be good. I don't know who that was. If he could tell him they're needed just like he told my son today....
