Question Sep 30, 2013 at 11:32 AM
  #1
I have a facebook/instagram friend that posed a pic of her "mood changing" nail polish. Her comment, as her polish was 2 different shade of blue today was, "Mood changing nails. Does this mean I'm bipolar today?!"

Maybe I'm just being sensitive because I'm in a crappy mood, but I don't find that funny at all. Of course, all her friends are LOLing about it, but I just want to tell her to STFU as she has NO IDEA what it's like to be bipolar. People think making jokes about MI is a way of de-stigmatizing it, but to me it's just offensive.

Thoughts?

I think that's very offensive. I hate it when people joke about being bi-polar. Like its even remotely fun!

If this is a close friend, perhaps a private message just explaining how that reference is offensive to someone who actually lives with the disorder. Probably wouldn't be mean about it, just sort of educational. I don't think responding in anger accomplishes anything except reinforcing her mistaken ideas about bipolar disorder.

Depending on my "mood", I would be extremely offended especially if it was a close close friend or I would laugh about it...... Depend on the day I am having...??

She's not really close. I've known her for a umber of years. She gets pissy when people make uneducated remarks about things, yet here she is doing the same thing. I haven't responded, I'm just stewing.

Meh, if this is offensive, we would have to come with new term for truly mean and outward offensive stuff.

Rather ignorant and not funny. But who never misused ANY serious term, throw a rock. Most likely people just pick up on it and use it without even thinking too much.

Good point. I guess I'm just sensitive this morning.

I think it's totally rude, ignorant, offensive, & insensitive. But thinking about the possible ways you could react/respond, and thinking around the corner, there's not much you can do right? And stay honorable with any chance of being understood?

Although it might be funny (from my perspective) to write, "Be careful with that stuff, they make it with lead and cobalt for the color. If you bite your nails and ingest it could cause further brain damage!"

But that's terribly passive aggressive, which solves nothing.

eh, I myself get upset over people being stupid. Once my roommate caught me crying over "people are being stupid on Internet".

sorta like this, isn't it?

Would you find this offensive?

So I try to not get offended over people being simply stupid and not knowing better, otherwise, I'd spend my whole life pissed off at the world. Which I am enough as it is already.

I don't really get upset by people referring to objects and things of the like as bipolar. I will get offended though if some one calls someone bi polar or says that they had a panic attack when they were just briefly stressed.

LOL! That would probably start a war. I think I'm better off just keeping my comments to myself.

Me too. It's just like saying "that's retarded" or "that's gay". I just want to punch people that say stuff like that.

I try to look at bipolar as having 2 different meanings:
1. Real: Mental illness
2. Popular: Very rapid changes when referring to anything including mood

I tend not to take offence to these things because I feel people use definition two. No amount of education will take this word out of popular culture because English is an ever evolving language.

I won't get properly mad about it, but I will point out that it's insensitive and incorrect. If you wanted bipolar nails, then one half should be black and the other half way - as then they are two polar opposites, which is what people tend to mean.

People don't need to know if I'm dealing with an issue or not - I always point out things that have to do with mental illness or other insensitivities. Just like a "In case you're wondering..." thing.

Even if they ignore it or get mad; at least I tried to help them understand something.

Ignorant, but not purposly offensive. I think in this case just let it go as she did not mean it, she is just not educated and probably has not known anyone with the disorder.
