you don't fit the criteria for bipolar 1 or 2.

You're special.

Essentially, it's a provisional diagnosis that means "It looks like bipolar, acts like bipolar, and feels like bipolar, but we don't know yet if you really have it or what flavor you have". Pdocs like to use this one when your episodes don't fall inside the parameters for either BP 1 or BP 2---like if your hypomania lasts 3 days rather than the 4 required by the DSM, or if your cycles are super irregular, or if you don't respond to medications.

Which one is 296.7? That's what they wrote when I checked out of the hospital a few weeks ago. They clearly said in our talks that I was manic, but to say "NOS"? Didn't make sense.

I think it basically means they're on the fence --where on that fence they are, you'll have to ask your pdoc. You could ask what they're leaning towards, why they've given that diagnosis, etc.

They are interchangable it seems in a lot of ways. I was almost given this diagnosis last year when in the psych hospital. I refused! Lol I said, "I'll tell you I'm bipolar all day long, but not this!" Guess I was adamant! Lol My pdoc agreed with me and so did my T.

Right! WTH? Is that code for "so crazy we can't figure out which one to pick"?

I see this a lot on this forum, it also appears from in my experience that once the BPD is addressed the bipolar symptoms disappear. Have you tried DBT?

This is only for people who have both diagnoses?

I have been in DBT a few years, helps with my BPD stuff for sure, not so much with the bipolar. I am pretty sure both fit for me even though I rarely will claim BPD, no one knows what that means.

So, many of my BPD issues have been addressed, I still struggle greatly with bipolar. The bipolar disappearing makes no sense. If I am not mistaken, bipolar is a mood disorder? BPD, obviously is a personality disorder. 2 totally different things.

I only found out I had "borderline traits" in 2010 (full dx in 2011), I put 2 and 2 together when I looked into DBT, what is for and why my therapist was recommending it. Bipolar was "assigned" to me in addition to BPD in 2012 by the VA. I am not sure why, but I agree that I have issues with both.
