Is it the bipolar or is it just the bipolar meds or the fact that we're all getting older?

I have horrible memory for bipolar episodes. As soon as I am happy... I've always been happy. And when I get depressed I can't remember ever feeling good, EVER. I keep track in my day planner to remind myself. I think this part is the bipolar, but I'm not a doctor.

I know I have memory loss as a drug side effect. That part is drugs. But, when I get manic my memory seems to get much better and when I'm down I can't think. It is very hard to know. So many physical symptoms are part of bipolar.
Thanks for this!

I am only 31 and I used to remember everything, now not so much. I noticed this beginning with the lamictal in 2011. I have a lot of trouble with word recall and I will forget what I was saying in the middle of sentences. I started a mood journal bc my sense of time is out of whack. However I am currently feeling is how I have always felt. I am sure my husband likes that. I forget that I am mad at him on the occasions that I am.
Thanks for this!

I'm 34 and have struggled forever and I'm just now being treated for bipolar not sure which type but right now it seems like rapid cycling. I have mush for brains most of the time and it is really affecting my family. I used to have a near perfect memory.

Blogging is a great way to chronicle the ebb and flow of mood episodes, and just everyday life in general. I am turning 55 soon and my memory has slowed some (I call it menopause brain), but the BP and the meds don't make it any better. I have to write everything on sticky notes or I forget it. LOL

I've written in my blog almost every day since I started it June 1st, and I've captured a couple of hypomanic episodes which I can NEVER remember once they're over with. I'm coming out of one now and the memories of what I said and did are already fading......it's good to have the record to refer to because there are lessons in every mood episode. The take-home message in this one is "If you're on five different medications for bipolar disorder and you get to thinking the diagnosis is wrong......you just might be hypomanic"

Apart from a time I was on A LOT of ativan, I can mostly remember my episodes. What I really forget is the emotional significance of it all, particularly from depression and suicidal thoughts. After it passes it's like I never even experienced it first hand, and for that very reason I have a hard time relating to other people who have been suicidal before. I avoid any type of group therapy because of this.

After the last epsiode episode, I do for example remember the time I was sitting next to Santa in a mental hospital, which I was only there because everyone secretly knew I needed a relaxing place to work on my earth shattering revelations. I also remember thinking that I was between an invisible biblical war where the stars were trying to communicate with me.

I sometimes wonder if I remember too much.

Happy Camper, those are good things to remember! That's why I keep my blog: so I don't forget things like "the stars were trying to communicate with me" (in your case).

I thought I didn't remember lot of things... but once I started digging through some trauma memories... lot of things came up. Good and bad. So it's there.

I don't really remember my last semester on bachelor's study. That freaks me out.

Sorry about the trauma memories Venus. I'm hearing a lot of people remembering stuff, hard stuff we blocked out.
I think it's totally important because even if you don't remember - especially trauma work (!!) it's still there in your subconscious and would hopefully get processed so you can heal and become a more complete, harmonious, spontaneous person.
2 cents.
Thanks for this!

cause it leaks to subconsciousness and affects my reactions... I just have hard time figuring out why. But it seems I am able to revive some of that and hopefully deal with it. Hopefully my mood stuff is gonna get better for it.

No memory is worse then bad memory.
