My doc has me on Lithium, Xanax and Zyprexa. I just saw her yesterday and she upped my Lithium (levels were low) but said I can't go off the Zyprexa (anti-psychotic) yet. I've been on it for two months already - shouldn't it have done what it was supposed to do by now?
Is anyone being treated long term with an anti-psychotic? Are their any that don't make you gain weight? I've already gained 15lbs (which were needed) but anymore weight is not needed! |

I knew a former member that was bipolar - II, and had also been on Zyprexa, for awhile, I can't remember how long he said, but did gain a lot of weight adding to his depression.
I do not remember if he was prescribied an alternative, but remember his pdoc took him off the Zyprexa. Next visit you have, talk to your pdoc about your concern, it's good to let them know how you feel with and about your meds. he or she may be able to switch you to an alternative. Take care, DE

I have been on one of the new anti-psychotics for about 4 1/2 yrs. now (Abilify), as well as a bunch of other stuff. I've been told I am going to stay on this the rest of my life to minimize the risk of relapse. You can still relapse on meds that kept you stable for yrs., as I can attest to. I think they are supposed to help prevent or lessen the degree of severity of the episode, if you have one. I did gain 45 lbs. in the time I've been on Abilify & I'm not happy about it, but I had such awful side effects on all the others I tried.--Suzy

I take Lithium, Effexor and my anti psych is Geodon. It helps with the "noise" I hear. I hear audibly radio music (low) and tv (low) and voices of people talking (i feel about me, but I cant understand them). I take a low dose 40mgs 2x a day. It seems to control it. Angel

Zyprexa is now approved by the FDA for treatment of bipolar disorder as well as being an anti psychotic.it's dangerous to abruptly stop any psych med.always talk to your doctor.first trust me it keeps you out of the hospital.I hope this helps.
