I have had depression since I can remember. I have deep dark depressions. I was afraid I would get so depressed that I would kill myself. I finally gave in to medication treatment. I responded very quickly to the Paxil. I was better in a week. The dark cloud had lifted. I got hyper, activated and hypo manic from the Paxil. I had obtained the Paxil samples from my primary care doctor at the time. I decided I owed it to myself to go to a specialist. I finally went to a psychiatrist. I went to the only one in my area who was accepting new patients. He immediately put me on depakote without much thought or questioning. I asked him if I had a diagnosis and he said BP II. This info is the earliest part of my interaction with the psychiatrist community.

My question is this.... How many other people have had their first hypo manic or manic episode triggered by antidepressants? What are your thoughts on this? Do you know where there is any it is referenced that having a manic response to antidepressants is diagnostic for bipolar disorder? I have had this as a diagnosis for 14 years.

Any thoughts, comments or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

From what I read awhile ago, according to the bipolar spectrum disorder it's part of bipolar IV or rapid cycling caused by anti-depressants. I'd check the DSM IV though or with a pdoc.
