My pdoc switched me from lamictal to depakote (divalproex) in Oct 13 for mania, it stppped it in a huge hurry. I ended up still getting depressed but with some other changes to meds I am doing better. Initially I was very sleepy and I dont know if it was part of my tummy being upset since I also had been on antibiotics. I got a bacterial infection in my tummy from antibiotics. Once all that cleared up my tummy has beeen fine and am having no trouble with the depakote.

I have been on Depakote (divalproex) for 15 years. I have seizures as well as severe manias. I used to get 3 kinds of seizures (grand mal/falling down "fits", petit mal/staring "fits" and temporal lobe. Now I only get the staring kinds. The manias have calmed a lot, altho' they flare up in Spring & also when I'm under a lot of stress. Depakote does make me sleepy. The pdoc started me out at a high dose (a.m. & p.m.) & after 2 months of just being So sleepy, he halfed that dosage. I like that it makes me sleepy at night but not in the a.m. I still am drowsy but not as bad. And I Love not having so many seizures & having the manias calmed down. I do not suffer as badly from depressive bouts as some people do (I get agitated/angry).

I was severely dizzy, hungry, and lost a lot of hair on that one. Didn't do anything for mood.

It was a long time ago that I was on Depakote, but beware, for me I gained 40 lbs in less than 6 months. And yes I know your mental health is important, but so is your physical health.
