My partner voluntarily entered a facility to find a drug to control mood since latuda, ambein, and geodon have caused acute akasthia. Her Dr is away for 2 weeks and covering dr suggested inpatient care to get the mood drug settled.
I think she is settling in, but If she insists on leaving, what are her options? Thank You! |

Many hospitals will have a couple of step down services. Intensive outpatient (IOP) is a common option and probably looks different depending on the hospital. In mine, IOP patients continue to come in for services, including seeing their pdoc, every day, but they go home at the end of the day. They also have a psychiatric outpatient program that is done completely outpatient several evenings a week.
The hospital should be able to discuss options that are available. |

I only know the laws for MI, they may vary in your area.
If a patient is voluntary and wants to leave before the docs say so, they cannot leave before 72 hours. After that time there they set up a court case for the patient to argue that they are competent and of sound mind not suicidal, etc. and for the docs to say they need to stay longer. This can take up to another week in which the patient is kept in the hospital. Then the court makes their decision, and it goes from there. Really, through that process you'll probably be in the hospital longer than the average stay (5-10 days) anyways and will only bring more misery for yourself. Tell them to stick it out and hope for the best. |

I am in Minnesota. I wanted to leave right after being put in the hospital. I had to sign an AMA form and was told I had to stay for 12 hours. That gave the doctor time to come and talk to me. There were three options, let me go or involuntarily commit me if I left or change my mind. My pdoc told me she would take me to court so I said I would stay.

Sometimes I just don't get hospitals. Those who want out are forced to stay,
I need in but they won't admit me. Ugg. |
