Has anyone on here ever tried to adopt or foster kids? Did the bipolar diagnosis hinder your efforts?

From what I have researched you'll need a recommendation letter from your psycharist and therapist saying that you are stable along with a written statement about what you plan to continue being stable. All of the things I have found are for private adoptions. I would call DHHR or look at the paper work for the foster care system.

I'm really interested in finding out about this too. I haven't looked into it much yet, but I know there is a form about mental health that must be completed by a doctor and asks if you have ever been diagnosed or treated for a mental disorder, and if you have ever been hospitalized. I'm in Canada, so I don't know if it's different elsewhere. I have figured that I would not be accepted as an adoptive parent because of my mental health. They are pretty tough with how they screen adoptive parents, psychiatric records are just one of many screens. I would love to be able to adopt, because I want a child, but I worry that a pregnancy would destabilize me. Unfortunately my thought is that adoption is not an option for me. Please tell me if I am wrong.

I'm young, but I want to adopt too when I'm older since I don't think I could ever give birth with all my illnesses and I wouldn't want to pass everything down. I didn't know they did psych evaluations :/
