Does anyone know how this works?
My fiance said she is leaving me and now I can barely think straight and having terrible terrible thoughts. I have an appointment with my pdoc wednesday morning but I am afraid it is not going to help. I'm sitting at work and all I am able to do is sit here and try not to break down. I really think I need some time off. Besides being BP 2 I also have GAD, not taking any meds for it but do you guys think it will help if I do? I just don't want to be on an entire pharmacy's worth of medication. |

Maybe not FMLA but possibly short term disability, sick leave....something. Just for a few days.

Short or long term disability and possibly FMLA in addition to them for the occasional bad day you may have here and there. Good luck!

You can take FMLA or short-term disability at this point based on a personal mental or physical health diagnosis for yourself at this point. FMLA is designed for your own personal medical issue (mental health or physical) and/or a medical issue or death of an immediate family member: parent, spouse, child, (I am not sure if extends to grandparents); this can go up to 12 months and if don't return in that time, your employment is terminated. Short-term disability is for a medical issue for yourself (up to 3 months) and can lead into long-term disability as needed. Many times short-term disability is taken before FMLA so you don't use this up if need in the future, it can only be used once; check on this though as the policies may have changed as to which they can hold your job and will depend on how long you need to be out.
You have to get documentation from a medical/mental health provider and then contact your human resources or employer to find you the steps you need to take. I would first talk with your medical provider about this though before talking with your employer to make sure you can get the documentation indicating you need to take leave and discuss for how long initially. Things are not easy right now and I hope that you find some relief soon. Hang in there. ![]()

Forgot to mention too that not all employer''s have short-term or long-term disability, so that is why it is important to verify company policies as to what is available to you.
Sending good vibes your way meanwhile. ![]()

I had intermittent FMLA for a while. It helped me keep my job. I had to take paperwork in to my Dr and then in to work to be approved. It took a couple weeks, but was backdated for those couple weeks. My employer made me use all sick leave and vacation first. My leave rolled over, so I didn't worry much about it running out as long as I didn't use it too often.

Can they legally make you take vacation days like that? By two weeks you mean the time it took to get registered in the beginning or two weeks every time you want to use it? Because Im not talking about even taking that much time off… it wouldnt even be helpful

I'm not really sure if it was legal, but it was in the paperwork I had to sign for them. The requirements depend on the employer, but i think they all make you use your sick leave before fmla takes effect. By two weeks I meant the initial time. After that, I could call out FMLA any day I needed to. I find FMLA good to have even if I end up not using much just because it's nice to have the option. Do you have sick leave? Because if you only need a couple days that might be enough...

It might be too late anyway. My fiance hasn't said she's leaving for sure...only that she's "pretty sure."
So if it is anytime very soon then I am in trouble if it takes that long to sign up for FMLA. If she does go, I just know I'm going to have serious issues with anxiety and depression. I'll end up living alone, 3 hours from family with no friends in the area to lean on...except the tdoc...haha. I have an appointment with my pdoc on wednesday. I will bring it up then. |

Hopfully things will settle down and work out for you ..
A few things to keep in mind .. FMLA is time off with proper doctor info, but you will not receive a paycheck at all . Short term disability only pays a portion of your regular pay I think its maybe 66 % or something along those lines . So maybe using sick days and vacation time would be a good option . Good luck and I hope things work out for you in your relationship ![]()
