Hi everyone... My lady has been my payee for 10+ years now. Lately we've been talking about what to do if anything happens to either of us. On my side is my money.

I've heard that if you're Bipolar, you're not allowed to manage your own money and that SS would appoint you a payee. I have no one that I can trust to take over that position.

I've been told that if you're Bipolar you are not allowed to handle your own money. But my shrink says if he writes a letter to SS, I "can" manage my own money. However, I've also heard that I might lose my disability if SS is told that.

Does anyone here manage their own money? Or did you have a payee, then control your own money?

Thanks everyone for your time.

I've not awarded disability yet, but I totally suck at managing money.

I am on SSDI as BP I. I receive the check as direct deposit, and I manage my own money. I have never heard of SS handling BP different from any other disability in regards to the money.

Thanks everyone for you thoughts and kindness. I've been searching the net and reading and reading. So far, the only thing I found that was a negative on this was SS might think if you can manage your own money then you might not be disabled anymore. I know that sounds strange, but I did read it.

The next time I go to my shrink I will talk to him about it and see what he says. I would imagine that he has some experience with this before. And if anyone else have some thoughts, I would like to hear them too.

You people are great... thank you

I worry about the same thing too. I have a representative payee that's getting up in age and has health problems, I wonder what will happen if that person passes. I have no one else. SS decided I needed a payee, I didn't ask for one. Can I somehow get a letter from my doctor stating I can manage on my own?
