Hi. I'm leaving a msg for my pdoc Monday with my T. I've gained over 50lbs. On Abilify then seroquel. Then he takes me off adderall. So you can imagine my excitement as I try diet & walk 25 mi a week.

I'm going to.ask him to put me on Metiformin, topamax or mirapex.

Has anyone been on these meds? Is there a better med I'm missing?

Thank you so much. Tnt

I am interested in the responses. I have gained over 10 pounds in last 2 weeks. Seems like it is the Seroquel. Have found less complaints with latuda which I am also on.

I lost 40 lbs on topomax. It happened in about a month or two. I know thts probably unhealthy bit it was also partly mania and a change in my eating habits.I thought it was a good med too. Do some resears though or talk to your doctor about the side effects because some people have issues. I guess that's any medicine though.
Thanks for this!

I should add that I was also on seroquel.

I'm on mirapex and i haven't gain any weight from antipsychotics. I've taken it with zyprexa and seroquel, and now saphris, and so far so good. I don't know if i would have gained without it, but i don't want to stop it to find out. I don't know if it helps with weight loss, or just prevents weight gain. I haven't noticed any side effects. My pdoc wanted to discontinue it when i switched to saphris because saphris is supposed to be weight neutral, but i convinced her to let me stay on it just in case.

I actually lost weight after I started on Geodon a little over a year ago. But I did gain some back thanks to several stints on Zyprexa. I'm only holding my own now because I make myself stick to low-cal snacks and meals during the day, and then I eat a big dinner but stay away from desserts.

It's the best I can do under the circumstances, because Vitamin Z makes me insanely hungry and I've been known to gain 25 lbs. in only six weeks on it. It also tends to drive my blood sugars well north of 200, which is too high (I'm a diabetic). I wish that weren't the case, because the stuff WORKS. But right now my pdoc's more worried about my instability than anything else, so who knows how long I'll be on it this time.

I'm on seroquel and topomax. I didn't gain a lot of weight with seroquel before I got on the topomax as I'm on wellbutrin also. The topomax definitely helps with sugar cravings, and it's easier to "listen to your body" to see if you are really hungry or are just eating for the hell of it.

Thanks for the replies. I can understand why a lot of people go med free. I've throw the idea around of taking meds as needed.

Metformin does not keep me from gaining weight, but since it produces no side effects and protects from diabetes (I have diabetes on both sides of the family), I keep taking it. 1500 mg a day.
Thanks for this!

I am going to have to get one of those portable blood sugar testers. Vitamin Z? Interesting term for the med. I am now on Olanzapine too. I have gained allot of weight. Maybe Mirapex will help?

LOL. I call it Vitamin Z because it's my go-to med whenever I run into real trouble with this illness. It's kept me out of the hospital I don't know how many times. But I do have something of a love-hate relationship with it because it plays hell with my blood sugar and puts on pounds that I really do NOT need.

I don't know much about Mirapex other than what it's traditionally used for (restless legs and sometimes Parkinson's tremors etc.) I doubt a doctor would put you on it just for keeping weight gain at bay, but then, I live in a small town and I've not heard of it used for that.

The way I look at it, I can be fat and sane, or I can be fat and INsane. I choose the former.

I just saw my T but she said my pdoc won't add any meds until he sees me in 3 months ugh. She had never heard of metiform except for use in diabetes.

I gained weight on Seroquel so they put me on Geodon. Now I'm back to my normal weight. Idk if it's used for bipolar though.

I heard that but I can't afford the $200/mo for geodon. I'm taking my chances on lamictal and seroquel/PRN.

It is ridiculous that our psych meds are the ones that are all where we can't afford them. Even the generics are high. The system sucks.

I know, Jack same with ppl who need ssi or ssdi. I have read that lamictal is also for mood disorders and I take 200 mg. My mister conservative pdoc took me off so many drugs. No more valium and for my 3 ruptured discs and pinched sciatica no more muscle relaxers or percocet. When I went into the ER for suicide ideation he said he won't write anymore scripts for aderrall bc I had valium in my blood work. I had some left over from my last pdoc and he said I wasn't truthful. Seriously???

Online he has 1 star out of 5 ★ hahaha. The only reason I could get in to see him is bc no one else wanted an appt lol. He is an addiction specialist as well and takes everyone off all addictive meds no matter if they have a problem. He's Mr personality.

I gained 30 pounds on lithium in 2011 and I can't get rid of it.
Every time my pdoc recommends a new pill I ask if it causes weight gain and if he says yes, I say no I won't take it. I'm 5'1" and weigh 190 pounds. This is h*** on my arthritis. I just had both knees replaced and I need to lose weight so that my new knees last longer.

That's weird.. I gained weight, like 60lbs, on respiradol. Once I went on abilify I started to lose a little. Then once I went on metformin I've lost a lot. But I also cut out virtually all carbs, so it's not that surprising. My psuedo-paleo diet has worked well for me..

That's awful! I'm so sorry and I know exactly what you mean about once it's gained it's permanent!! I am fighting weight that I started gaining 3 yrs ago. I have ruptured discs so I hear you on arthritis. I'm sorry about your knees, and it's so expensive to use a pool. The way I look at it is I feel like **** every single day bc I'm obese I'll take a prn antipschotic for so many reasons.

Lost weight on Geodon. Gained 40 lbs on Lithium! Abilify and Seroquel were weight neutral for me. Geodon is available in generic now.
