I came down with the flu today. I started the day feeling goog and being upbeat. Then I started to feel sh*tty, down, and anxious. I did not know what was going on until I figured out the mild depression was not it. It has been the flu. I rested a little took some aspirin, and an hour later I became more manic. I have been restless, not able to sit still, chattering up a 'blue streak' over a TV show. I cannot settle down even though I can feel like *****. My anger is easy to set off.

Does this happen frequently to others here? This seems to happen when I get sick.

I don't get sick often enough to notice a pattern (knock on wood) but I do know one of my worst recent manic episodes happened while I had a cold, and I was taking over-the-counter cold medication. I read later that something in the medication, I think it was the cough suppressant, could exacerbate mania.

Then again, next time I had a cold I tried to get the same results (not recommended) and nothing happened.

I had the "crud" back in February, and it touched off a mixed episode that lasted much longer than the illness. It probably happened because I was up half the night coughing and wheezing and thus wasn't sleeping.

I seldom get physically sick, but when I do, it's a doozy. Sometimes it exacerbates my asthma to the point that I have to take prednisone, which makes me manic as hell, so I avoid the stuff like the plague. This time I really should've been on it, but I didn't want to deal with the consequences.....and ended up having a mood episode anyway.

I prefer to be alone if I get sick, I snap at everyone.

I think this is it. I get restless and anxious, which is normal when I am sick. This leads to exhaustion accompanied by still being unable to sleep. This is where the trouble begins.

I doped myself up and finally got some sleep.
