I've always known that bipolar was hereditary, but what I don't understand is how it skipped two generations in my family. My grandma was diagnosed in 1995, and my son was recently diagnosed. Is the skipping possible?

My mom was diagnosed with depression, and I have GAD with ocd, ptsd and depression and have always wondered if I was bp.

(Apologies if I sound like I'm just obsessing.)

Yr not obsessing at all. I firmly believe that bp or any mi for that matter can skip generations. Do you think you meet the criteria for bp? Have you got a pdoc? I assume you do given yr diagnosis. I would talk to him or her if you have it. Do you have extreme mood swings and agitation? If you have depression you could have bp2 cause that is the main problem with that. I have bp2 and experience all the above symptoms along with others as well. But I Am not a pdoc. I encourage you to talk with yr Dr about it. It must be hard to have a child with bp. I have a son with aspergers syndrome and it is very hard to watch him suffer. So I understand mi in yr child. I'm sorry yr having to struggle with all this. Take it easy on yr self.

I've read over the symptoms of both classes of bp and right now for me it's hard to tell cause I've been in a depressive state for 4 months. I have a therapist who says I don't have no, but considering my frequent relapses, that's why I wonder. I relapse about every 3 - 4 years. When I'm not depressed, I'm more creative, I know that.

I don't take meds either. I'm paranoid of them.

From what I understand, all genes and heriditary conditions can skip a generation.
In my case, I'm the first generation, lol, no bp in my family except me.

Many Pdocs now believe BP is on a spectrum, from unipolar on one side to BP I on the other. In that case it hasn't really skipped, everyone is just at a different point along the line. I couldn't say because I'm not an expert.

I've heard that bipolar can definitely skip generations. I know in my family, my grandma had bipolar. On the other hand, her mother committed suicide, so that was a successive generation.

If only one parent has BP their kids only have <30℅ chance of bipolar. I would assume that is true for anyone carrying a gene.
