I ask because in my early 20's I was diagnosed first with depression and anxiety. I was put on depression meds and valium as well. Then I was diagnosed BP and put on lithium too. I was talking to my family doctor, who had known me for years, and I was telling him I didn't feel any different on the lithium. He told me after knowing me so long he did not feel I was BP and I should seek a different pdoc.

Started seeing a new pdoc who tried me on every depression med there is (ok, I'm exadurating). Over the next few years I was on and off depression meds and anti-anxiety meds.

Forward to about 10 years ago. I was re-diagnosed as BP by a new pdoc. I was put on some new meds and I've been doing pretty darn well since then. I've adjusted doses and meds over the years but overall doing much better than I did for all the undiagnosed years!

Yes. I was initally diagnosed as BP I with psychotic features. I then was diagnose as BP II. I next was diagnosed as NP NOS. I then has the pdoc give me a mood stabilizer which has worked very well for me, So this means at least BP II. But I have not been re-diagnosed yet.

My diagnosis changes so often, I don't even 'claim' one anymore. I just say I have a mood disorder.

Initially, it was major depressive disorder. Then bipolar II. Then cyclothymia. Then Mood Disorder NOS. Then back to bipolar. I've given up even wondering.

The mood stabilizer worked well for me, though. So, that might mean something.

Yeah...every p-doc has their own ideas about what my diagnonsense is. I've lived with myself for 51 years, so by now I pretty much know which categories I fall into.

It was initially atypical depression, but then I wound up very manic and in the psych ward, for 3 months. At first they just watched me for a while, then tried meds, and eventually after many consultations, diagnosed me bipolar I with psychotic features. I think a few years ago it may have possibly been schizoaffective bipolar type, but I'm pretty sure right now it's bipolar I with psychotic features. I haven't asked in a while. It doesn't really matter, as long as the treatment works.

I went from BP 2 to Depression and generalized anxiety- then back to BP 2 to Atypical Deoression to no label. I think I'm a mixed bag of wonderfulness.

NOS = Not Otherwise Specified. My abnormal psych prof said it's basically the catch-all for a presentation that doesn't clearly fit a specific diagnosis.

First MDD then BP less than 2 months later. The other diagnosis followed (ADHD - false, GAD - true, PTSD - relatively mild IMO) with BP being the primary diagnosis. Every single pdoc I've ever seen has agreed with the BP diagnosis. Now OCD, GAD, PMDD and BP.
