OK, The "Gremlin" in me has left after yesterday's meltdown over what my Mother in Law said to me.... I'll start..

1) Just think positive
2) Everyone feels down sometimes
3) Pray
4) Snap out of it

6) Try to overcome your moods; it might be just a vitamin deficiency and you don't even look like you had any problems.
7) Your depression is another one of those 'teen depressions', it will be gone before you know it.
8) You only think you are low, and that is just because your mind's not busy enough.

9. Get over it
10. There's nothing actually wrong.
11. You've got a good life, what's the problem?
12. There are a lot of people who have things a lot worse than you do.
13. You should take medication.

15. Are you sure you're not just hormonal? (which is what my mom asked when I told her my dx)

17) "It's your depression talking" (no, sometimes it's my realism talking).
18) "If you don't take meds, your brain will kindle and you will kill yourself"
19) "There is no hope for you with this illness"
20) "I know what bipolar is, there's been report about it on TV" (usually refering to two minute soundbite on one of the commercial TVs that claimed that "bipolar formerly known as schizophrenia can also be caused by a tickbite". I swear I heard this on Czech TV station).

"I have known you for years, and you never seemed 'nutty' before. Maybe it is the meds you are taking." (No, I just hid it by isolating. Remember all those times I was hard to reach and you thought that I was just busy).

"I am more bipolar than you are (from a non BP friend). (What, is this a competition here?!?!)

"Hearing about your problem stresses me out, because I am used to fixing things for people and I can't fix you.") (God Complex + Debbie Downer = No Bueno. Just sayin' )

2. I think I may have that
3. Should you be telling people that you are BP?

My Mom asks most of the annoying questions.

Are you taking your medicine?
Why can't you lose weight on your meds?
I can understand why your husband is mad - you just got out of a mental hospital.
All I ever wanted was for you to be happy

"Every adult struggles with focusing their attention."-ex-therapist
"You're catastrophizing."-same therapist, after I told her about my worries of becoming homeless or going to hell.
"I have ups and downs too. I don't think it's an illness."-my mom, after I was first diagnosed
"I think that's how many Christians become born-again. You're pretty normal."-my friend, after I told him about some religious delusions I had years ago

Good thread! I wish there was a way to make people understand...

"You can't be bipolar. I've never seen you suicidal." (Oh yes he had! I'm just not one to talk about it. The dangerous kind, yeah.)
"Everyone's bipolar."
"Just control yourself!"
"I always knew you were crazy."
"But the sun is shining!"

The first 2 were in the same night from 2 different people I truly thought would be understanding. I rarely trust enough to disclose.
3, 4 and 5 were from the ex. The sunshine one was just plain bizarre. Good guy, he just totally didn't get it.

21. Do you think that maybe after reading all about psychology you're thinking you have something you don't?
22. Are you sure you're Bipolar?
23. Sometimes, you just need to snap out of it and relax!
