How should I write about my bipolar disorder and sick leave in my cover letter and CV? How honest should one really be?

If anyone can offer any advice on this matter it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Thanks for this!

I was working with an employment center and ran into the same problem. I wouldn't mention the BP, unless you feel it may impact employment otherwise leave it out. You may have a hard time finding a job. As for your sick leave, that's exactly what it was. You had an illness you've recovered and are ready to get back into the work force.

Don't forget about the stigma. Good luck on the job hunt

I would say no -- the only way you might want to let them know if after you get the job, mention it to HR -- but I only told my boss after 2 years.

Putting those details in your cover letter is sure fire way of remaining unemployed.

Sad but true that we have to hide, unless faced with no alternative.

Don't put it in. It's none of their business. If they ask about the gap in the resume you could tell them you took some personal time and now you are excited to start working again. That could be sick time, travel, looking after family member, working on art projects... It could mean quite a few things, not just mental illness.

DO NOT disclose your illness to prospective employers! In theory, they can't refuse you employment based on your disability, but they'll find a gazillion other reasons not to hire you. This is one time when honestly is not the best policy. Besides, it really isn't any of their business.....we do not give up our right to privacy when we apply for a job. Good luck to you.
