Haven't personally had it but have read posts on here with others have had it. Think it's used under select circumstances and certainly not a first point of call.

I'd like to hear from other folks who've had it, too.

I had it about seven years ago to get me out of a deep soul crushing depression. It worked but I lost a lot of memory. At the time I didn't believe I was bipolar so I didn't recognize the following mood state as a probable hypomania. But I went from being hospitalized seven times in a year to six years hospital and med free so it must have done something for me. Took away the severity of my symptoms for sure. I want to do it again but I'm afraid it wouldn't work as well this time around and I will have wasted my time, money, and memory for nothing.

I wouldn't recommend ECT unless all else has failed but it does work for most people.

I was hospitalized a little over a year and half ago for depression and doctors recommended it and they tried to convince me to do it and it was my last chance before my insurance ran out (I had lost my job right before that and couldn't pay for cobra any more at that point). My depression did lift and I got a job a couple months after which I have still been able to hold which means I have insurance...I've had depression on and off since I was a young child and I'm starting to fall into depression again and I was wondering if ECT would be more of a lasting solution? Or is it just a quick fix for a short period of time?

I just finished my fourth treatment for a severe bipolar depressive episode and I think it may be starting to work. Good luck with it, if you try it.

Mewgal2 - Can you keep me posted on how it works out? How many sessions do you have to do and over how long?

I have treatments Mondays and Fridays. I don't think the psychiatrist has a set amount in mind for me. It seems he was implying the max would be 12 total. I'll keep you posted. This is my last chance. Antidepressants haven't helped this horrible bout of depression.

ECT worked for a long while for me but I've heard others say it's only lasted a couple of months so who knows it's a chance you'd have to take. It lessened the severity of my symptoms but didn't completely take them away. I also did a lot of work in therapy after I got ECT that helped me turn things around.
