Oh my Gold. If you watch this on You Tube, please comment on this. I had no idea about the history of psychiatry. Granted it's long at 1:49 and I am taken more than one day to view it. I found it "shocking" and all I can say is see it for yourself, then decide the importance. Info unmatched, and related books and authors mentioned.

Stupid me, I'm not sure where to look for the "Link" however search on You Tube "Psychiatry An Industry of Death, Full Length. Also shows Full Version. Lower down says full credit goes to CCHR. I certainly hope this does it.

It, as scary as it appears in many ways, makes me wonder if I should drop the medications, but do not tell my psychiatrist. I like her, but she certainly spends only a short time with me. At times my hands shake, I do not wish that to get worse, nor do something I'll regret later. Believe me, the video puts lots of unsettling ideas in my head, and if it is true, things can only get worse for all as a whole.

I didn't watch the video, but I did look at the group's website, because I always check sources. In the "about us" section of their website, I found this:

"CCHR was co-founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology and Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus Dr. Thomas Szasz at a time when patients were being warehoused in institutions and stripped of all constitutional, civil and human rights."

So, there you go. I would consider this info very biased and unreliable. Please don't give up your meds based on this!

Ive watched it. Its nothing surprising. My Dr talked to me about this stuff once. They didn't understand what was "wrong" with mentally ill people.

Don't be sorry! If you look at any medical history it's messed up.

I did not watch the video so I can't comment on it. I do know that psychiatry has a nasty history of abuse and misdiagnosis. They seem to be slowly improving but still have the potential to cause great harm especially when they get the diagnosis wrong.

Apparently Scientology is quite opposed to both psychiatry/pyschology.

As much as I have recently grown to distrust pharmaceutical treatments I would not place any merit on claims originating from Scientology. I may still watch the video though as I tend to find the amount of crazy beliefs held by what most people seem to consider 'normal' to be quite amusing from time to time. Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying people think Scientologists are normal, just that the basis of their beliefs are predominantly just as irrational, if not more so.

No, this was a good topic to bring up. I didn't mean to seem critical of you and I apologize if it seemed that way. In general, it is silly to do what I did, which is discount something without watching/reading it. I do need to learn more about the history of treatment for MI.

I just don't trust the Scientologists and I do feel able to have a better life due to modern pharmaceuticals.

I don't understand what happened with deinstitutionalization. I know it was meant as a good thing, but I work in a public service field and see many, many people who are too sick to get help -- or too sick to realize they need it. It is sad for them and difficult for us to serve them. Mostly sad.

Good topic. Didn't mean to squelch it.

I saw this movie. Don't discredit it just because of the source. That's just as ignorant as believing something blindly because of it's source. Trust me, it's a good documentary. It brings lots if good points **** the history of psychiatry.

The important one being that psychiatry isn't a real science. Pushing drugs into people's bodies and not knowing how they work is not the scientific method. Especially when so many of these "medicines" cause suicidal tendencies and worse side effects.

Yes, some of the medications work for some of the people. But it's not an exact science, which is dangerous.

It's a good watch regardless.

Scientology is weird to me, but I know nothing about it. Seems they shed propaganda for some unknown reason I can not understand.

One word: propaganda. The value of propaganda is very limited. I would say propaganda has no value since there are better sources for this same information.

Scientology or not, the movie makes some good points. Psychiatry's history isn't that much better than scientology's....

I watched it in like June or something, was quite interesting and no I didn't know the source at the time and knowing it now doesn't change my perception of it.

Even though I think Scientologists are crazier than I am

Man is a cruel creature, add some ignorance and fear to the mix, and I'm not at all surprized by how people with MI were treated in the past...

I mean, weren't women burnt at the stake not too long ago out of an abundance of fear and ignorance?

Shyt happens
