Does anybody get agitated at the grocery store like I do? I like calm stores with no beeping and quiet music. I don't lie crowded stores. I get frustrated easily and have to leave. It's inconvenient, but I'll go to two or three grocery stores seeking out a quiet one.

I personally loathe Walmart ..( my only option) its a black whole full of loud people , kids screaming and no one seems to care, meanwhile I want to just pick up things an throw them.

I just rush in and out as fast as possible... I do often put off shopping until 2am.

I feel your pain .

I don't get agitated, but loud speaking people can be annoying for sure. Some folks just speak out too loud to others in their party or group shall I say. It's like they want to be heard above others as if they hold special importance. And then malls can be too loud as well. I read recently not only is the world becoming louder, but night time lights are over taken darkness. Like even from outer space. Not like what our ancestors witnessed. I was up in Canadian wilderness alone, and I promise you could not see your hand in front of your eyes without some lighted tool. I would turn on and off my head lamp, and I stand behind this statement.

~christina, Yeah, I should postpone grocery shopping until Monday. If you're out at 2:00 a.m., get Safe Trek on your phone. It costs $1.99...for your own safety.

Tipper1492, right now I'm dreading going to a birthday party for a relative or that same reason. Loud people! I much prefer my own home. It's as quiet as a library. That's interesting about the light. No wonder our circadian rhythms are all screwed up!

I absolutely hate the store. I don't have children myself, but I can't stand screaming children. When going thru the "irritable" phase I just want to yell at people that are in my way, tell them to control their kids, quiet down, etc. I literally power walk thru the store while the hubby pushes the cart, in and out.

Noises that get me:

chewing
biting into crunching food
hearing someone swallow (OMG!)
heaving breathing
high pitched sneezing or coughing
high pitched noises in general!
someone clearing their throat ALL the time
kids crying/yelling in stores or restaurants (I get angry at the parent for this, for not taking them out)
crinkling envelopes
plastic bags
paper bags
gum popping or smacking (OMG)
when people smack their food when they eat
hearing someone eating nuts

Oh the horror!
Thanks for this!

I order my groceries through peapod for that reason. I get so anxious in stores and I get hot. LOL

It's an app for smart phones. You turn it on when you're walking alone. You hold the button down. If you press it, the cops come to your location. I guess you don't need it if you carry a gun!

I hate the store as well. It drives me crazy! The noise is unbearable and the people get in my way and my mind goes blank and I can't even remember what I need so I stare off into space and then run out. If you add a screaming child then forget it! I don't mind going to really small markets where I can find things quickly and then get out of there.

I use the method of keeping my senses calm to help my moods.

When I am more prone to react to my surroundings - over stimulation of some senses pushes me over the edge quicker, and if I can keep my environment stable, I can sometimes avoid over-reactive responses.

Examples, low lighting, using sound on low - or noiseless. Shutting away to keep surroundings calm. Using light scents.

My spouse is a quiet person, we both use headphones, and our dogs don't bark - maintaining sounds (and for him lighting must be low) help us both immensely.

Walmart is open 24 hours a day and I promise you, it is fabulous at 3am!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

edit added: Fingers 1 said this in the light and noise sensitivity post had good things to say, this I copied and pasted from that:

-----------

Yes I am sensitive to sound and light. Ever since I was diagnosed in 2004
I have made sure I lead a completely quiet and stress free life.
I believe that It is when you are in a hypomanic or manic phase that sound and light become a problem. You are on to something big here when you talk about low lighting.

Here are three things that can help you further.

1. Reduce your computer screens light output with F.lux a free program on the internet.

2. Google Bipolar disorder, light and darkness treatment implications.
This might just save your life !.

3. Keep a daily routine (bipolar loves routine)
Go to bed and wake up at the same time every night in a totally blacked out room. Try to have a sleep or at least lay down for one hour after lunch
again in a totally blacked out room.

I hope this helps ! PAY IT FORWARD !
Good luck !
Fingers 1

Yes. I can't stand going into any store and avoid it at all costs. I rarely sleep so I pretty much only shop at stores open 24 hours. It is always quiet and empty. I am fortunate to live near both a 24 hour grocery store and a 24 hour pharmacy. Not everyone is so lucky.

I doubt my piddly little police office/911 system would be set up for such thing.

But Thank you for your posting, I'm sure many people here could use an app like this

We do not have a 24/7 Walmart and, also, our 24/7 Safeway (the main grocery chain of the West Coast) has longer lines late in the evening because they only have one or two cash registers open, so over here it is faster to shop during the day when all the cash registers are open.

I also hate the noise at Wal-Mart. But, say, Mexican music at a tiny fruit stand is to my liking. I guess it depends on the context.

Some things are just so much cheaper at Wal-Mart that there are no other options.

I especially loathe unfamiliar stores that I don't know the layout.

I have to be armed with my list and only March down those aisles where my items can be found.

Where I live, chain stores do not have the same layout location-by-location. Say, Trader Joe's or Safeway have a completely different layout in each store. I always wondered why they cannot have a uniform layout.

I am extremely selective about where I shop and when and how often. I never grocery shop on Saturday, for example, when all the 9-5 folks are shopping for the week with children hanging off carts and the sample ladies block aisles with their wares. It's okay to notice what makes you uncomfortable and adapt for the sake of your well being.
