I have to clarify who I am and what I want and stick to it. I feel like each professional in my life is trying to push me in a different direction. I'm at fault because I am wishy-washy and listen to everything instead of standing up for what I believe in. I am afraid of being judged non-compliant or having them not want to treat me. This is not rational. It is just a fear of mine.

Have you considered telling your care providers your fears?

I think learning to advocate for yourself is the trickiest part of getting better. Hang in there! You know your body best!

I found that with therapists, too. I found that they wanted me to solve the problems that THEY thought i had -- not the problems that *I* thought i had. For example, i last saw a therapist for help with coping with manic spending and manic romancing. She thought my problem was that i am fat and gave me dieting tips. Idiot!

Sometimes it can be hard to be assertive with professionals. After all they are professionals. But we all know that doesn't make them perfect, and we have to work to find the right fit with our care team. After all we are our own best advocates in our care. We pretty much have to be.

Someone once told me that you need to "take the bits that you think apply to you, and leave the rest." From my experience with professionals, there are certainly some that push upon you their thoughts and ideas without really getting to know the real you, your values and core beliefs. In these circumstances If you don't have the choice of changing professionals, then try to just take at least one thing from every session that you can apply or that you feel is relevant. Ignore the rest if need be.
I would also be very up front with your professionals and convey to them that you are recieving mixed messages and feel that they are railroading (pushing you to an action they feel appropriate) rather than listening to you.
