I am Bipolar 1/Mani w/psychosis and I have been on on a lot of meds and it doesn't seem like anything works. I aM even more depressed and am on an emotional roller coaster. I was recently put on Seroquel for sleep and two Mood stabilizers and was wondering are meds supposed to suppress the mania and depression all together or just stop the frequencies of the episodes?

Imagine looking at a graph with severe ups and downs.
The meds take those swings in the graph and smooth them out so that the swings are now one flat line Keep trying with the meds. It can take a long time to get the right mix

I was just diagnosed in November and started new meds. So far it's helped with the swings a little. The depression part has been pretty intense though. I'm hoping that lifts soon. Hang in there!

Here's what my meds do: They lengthen my episodes but make them less severe. My psychosis / intrusive thoughts are now pushed to the forefront. That's what I'm working on in therapy. Meds take the edge off but do not take it away. I have to be on an anti depressant or my depression becomes life threatening.
