I'm not safe anymore and recent events have caused me to go over the edge a bit I discussed it with my pdoc last Wednesday and he wanted me to go in then, but I refused. Things have gotten worse since then

I'm just asking how to do it. I don't want to call my pdoc or make it seem like an emergency. I can make it to a place without harming myself. And I definitely don't want to call an ambulance.

Do I just walk in a hospital's front door and tell them about my plans and then they'll take me in, or what?

Help me, guys, please. I'm at my wits end and I just don't have another choice at this point

Personally, I always call my pdoc before I go. That gives him the chance to let the ER staff know I'm coming and he can give med orders before I get there. Of course, that may not apply if your pdoc is not on staff at your hospital. He prefers I call him because he likes to know when I'm going in. If it is during the day, he has me come by his office first so he can admit me directly to the unit and I don't have to go through the ER. (In Texas -- or maybe its just that hospital, can't remember--a patient has to have been seen by a doctor within 48 hours of admission or they have to go through the ER to be cleared). He's even met me outside the unit to bypass the ER. It isn't that the ER is horrible; they're actually very good and quite used to handling psych admissions. But it's just a longer process through the ER.

If you can't or don't call your pdoc, just go directly to the hospital where you will be admitted. Just tell them you are there for admission to their psych unit and they'll handle it from there.

I suggest going directly to the hospital with the psych unit if possible just because their ER is used to handling these situations and are generally more likely to handle you better. At least that's been my experience. Of course, if that isn't possible, any ER can get you to the nearest psych unit but you generally won't have your pick of where you go.

Is there any way to find out if the hospital has a psych unit before going there?

You can call your Pdoc office and just be matter of fact. Tell the office person that your dr recommended that you go in to the hospital when you saw him last weds, you said no, but now things have gotten worse and you've reconsidered his recommendation. ask them what you need to do to follow his advice.

It might seem like eating humble pie but it is better than going though the ER. Most doctors have a after hours number and you can call them if you don't want to wait for the 9-5 shift. They can deal with it, without making it into a big deal. It would just take a phone call on you Pdocs part, something pdocs do as part of their job.

That would be a good reason to call your pdoc. He/she can steer you in the right direction. The other thing you can do is call your insurance company (ours has a line specifically for mental health services) and they can tell you exactly what hospitals fall under your insurance. I think that's how I initially ended up using the hospital I do now that I think about it.
