I was just reading the post "why bipolar is so overly diagnosed in the U.S." I noticed people talking about the similarities in bp and bpd and the two different types of mood swings. Also apparently there's a stigma with bpd, what's the stigma? I'm new to all this and don't understand why doctors would be hesitant to properly diagnose someone because of whatever stigma. Is the health not more important. Also I've just recently been getting help for my problems with a T. I'm not officially diagnosed but she says she suspects bipolar so that's why I've come here. I feel like I have similar issues and experiences as many of you. From what I have learned on here there mood states within bipolar that aren't so called triggered by anything particular but maybe stress induced. Then there are mood swings of bpd that are situationaly triggered. It's crazy because I completely relate to both. Like for instance I've been in this irritable mood state the past few months, not triggered by anything, it's just the way i'm feeling lately, at the same time I'll get depressed feeling because of an argument that I had with dh. Like I'll be fine one minute and then someone can say something that sends me into this depression and I feel so bad about myself and I'll get the negative thoughts. This usually only lasts like a few hours or like a day. But my mood state shifts last for weeks or months. I guess I do understand how they overlap. I hope I understand all of this correctly.

This is just my take on the differences or one in the same. Everyone, mentally healthy or not, is going to react to stress. Everyone's feelings get hurt and no one is immune to insecurities here and there. Add these stressors on top of a mood already and of course it's going to feel worse for a while.
I think you are spot on with the triggers and no triggers theory. I've always been under the impression that it's the intensity that the triggers have on you in order to be classified bpd. Like the abandonment issues and what emotions arise when you feel abandoned. Intensity and quantity. Idk I score and feel pretty average with personality so I can't know what it feels like I just know that when a mood strikes generally it's not because of anything but I've been the exception before. Meaning a trauma sent me manic.
