With easter being tomorrow, I have finally managed to find the one holiday I can't dodge for some reason or another.

I have to go to the in-laws and spend and entire day with my partners entire direct family and nieces and nephews. This is the first time in about 6 months that I have had to try to act normal and function around a large group for an extended amount of time.

None of them know what's going on with me, nor the actions I had to take.

I am just scared that I will have an anxiety attack and end up in tears. I am scared that I (already feeling like I'm walking on eggshells) will mess everything up. I am scared that I have to tell them the truth and I am not sure I can do it.

Would it be a good idea to take my Valium along with me in case it gets weird? Do any of you choose to medicate to get through these sort of situations?

.... I'm just not sure I can can get through it without my emergency meds.

Yes, I think that taking a Valium with you is a good idea. I choose to medicate when I'm put in an uncomfortable situation that causes me anxiety.

How does Valium affect you when you take it?

Well in the past I had to rely on it for quite some time to stop me from going off the deep end and having nasty anxiety attacks. It calmed me and allowed me to function.

I will just take it with me to see if I need it. The pills can be halved, so I will start there if I feel the need.

I hate pretending. I have to on my fiancee dad's side. His mom's side is more family to me than my own. They all take some kind of meds for anxiety or depression.

I've never taken valium before but I do think it's okay to take something that will help with anxiety.
Just remember to take deep breaths and try not to worry about what they think. I sometimes try to put myself in the "I don't give an eff." mode and just talk and socialize the best I can.

Remember that things will be okay and you got this. Keep looking forward to getting back in the car going home and relaxing. Remind yourself It's just for today and before you know it you can take a sigh of relief.
I hope the best for you!!!!!
You got this!!!!

I'm occasionally prescribed a small amount of Diazepam for anxiety problems when I'm in groups.

I don't take it often, but I do take is as I need it and I always carry a couple with me for emergencies.

Knocks me off my feet but it helps me through situations I'm uncomfortable in.

At least take it with you, so if things get tough, you at least have the option.

Take it with you. Things have to be extreme ( hospital worthy) for me to take a prn.

This is the very sort of thing you have it for, so yes, I'd definitely say to bring it. That way, you have it if you need it.

Also, remember -- you don't need to tell them ANYTHING you don't care to. To whom and when you disclose things is your choice. There is no obligation whatsoever, because unless choose to share, it is none of their business!

As others have written, taking valium with you is more than OK. Situations like that are what "Vitamin V" was made for.

When I'm in group situations I sometimes have to remind myself that I'm not the focus of the attention of others. Other folks are more focused on themselves...I think most everyone is a bit self-conscious on some level. Looking at it from this perspective makes it easier to feel comfortable in group situations. In addition, your partner will be there to do most of the talking...which will take the pressure off you.

Good luck tomorrow. It's often hard for me to remember the advice I just gave you, but it's a helpful perspective to aim for. Good luck.

Haha, yeah that's fine. Take it before you go. I always take my benzo when I go to any family event. That's what they're for (well, anxiety inducing situations I mean).

Thank you all, I ended up taking two pills throughout the day and they are/were (still there) enough to get me through.

I drank a bit as well, so I sort of contribute that to helping as well.

Once again, thank you for the advice and happy easter
