Just want to share my experience with you...By the fourth day of taking this drug I had to stop. My face was feeling numb especially my teeth, I could not stay awake I was sleeping about 16 hours a day for 3 days straight. On top of that I was out of it for lack of better words. My therapist said she noticed I was acting different than usual. I felt almost invincible but dead at the same time I was feeling more suicidal than usual as well. So I went back to the psychiatrist she said that she doesn't usually give that one because it has a lot of side affects with other drugs (which I am not on any other drugs) but it was best for my price range since I was uninsured. Now that I got the Medicaid she has me on Divalproex so I am very happy about that since I had gotten it last year and it was helpful with the bipolar symptoms. I hope things stay good and I get to keep this insurance and medicine!!!!

Thank you so much for this post thundergodess.

I have not personally had experience with Carbamazepine.

I think it's very valuable that we share this information with each other.

I've been taking it for 4 years and have had no problems. I've even lost weight on it. Gained about 5 lbs when I first started. It's a good drug if you don't get side effects. Pulled me out of a really dark depressed state. It's a good drug if you don't get side effects.

I took it for over 20 years, with no real side effects that I was aware of. However, my doc recently took me off of it because she said that it has too many interactions with other psych meds. I was weaned off of it and am doing fine. It seems like my other meds are working better. I know it is hard on your liver [you are supposed to have a liver panel done every 6 months, at least that is my understanding] so I am glad to be off of it.

Wow I am surprised no side effects for you 2 and mine were so drastic! That is great though I guess we are all just different I haven't noticed the divalproex kicking in yet I'm on week 2 I had a long pmdd episode recently so it's very hard to tell if it's working yet since I believe it would be unrelated to BP and the divalproex wouldn't help the pmdd (just my guess!) I was thinking about asking the psych for a pmdd medication although I'm not sure if that is who you even ask! ugh my mother babied me for so long that I haven't learned the life skills I really need to live on my own I'm finding it very tough especially since she's been dating someone she very rarely speaks with me anymore.

I tried it once and because of the side effects was cutting the pills down to take 1/32nd of a pill (practically a molecule ). Otherwise I couldn't function. My psychiatrist stopped it pretty quickly and I moved on. I did sleep well those couple of weeks though....
