I have a question guys;

When hypomanic and super active, frantic, jumpy.. do people have hard time containing you ? do they become overwhelmed pretty fast ?

Me and a friend had to do a presentation in class.
Before class he told me I'm overwhelming (I was very hypomanic and restless, talking, dancing singing, flying basically)
I didn't want to pressure him so I left him alone until the presentation.

Later, in the last class another good friend told me something like "You have to relax and get yourself together" in context of my restless, fidgeting, mumbling behavior. I wasn't able to concentrate on anything and her comment upset me even MORE, eventually I stormed out of the classroom couldn't tolerate the whole setting... nevermind...

How you handle situations like that ?
I can't relax nor do I want to, I want to express how I feel like being (at the moment), although now I kinda feel bad because well.. friends..

Thanks.

Does your friend know your condition? If they don't you might educate them on why you get like that. Most people that know me really well can handle my moods.

When I told one of them, she said like;
I can totally understand you, and you can totally tell those stuff to me, really. I get it
And today she told me get my **** together. I love her, she's a friend but I guess I shouldn't expect everybody to 'understand' ...

Well the reality is you're right .... I don't think that your friend can understand - they don't walk in your shoes and nor are they bipolar......so....well yes they're going to pass comments that might upset you.

Maybe the fact that you were doing a presentation added an extra dose of hypo because you said you were dancing / singing / flying. Shhhh I won't tell you I've done some funny things in public when hypo too. I think alot of people who have been hypo have done .... something in public at some stage .....

I get how you interpreted the comment And today she told me get my **** together. Sometimes it's not that easy it's like someone saying "Get over your mood state" <- can be said in context of depression or hypo I guess. I don't buy into that it doesn't work like that.

Do people have hard time containing you?

Sure.

I have many many stories on that one
Thanks for this!

My poor husband is usually the one who has to try to 'contain' me, and he can't win---I either laugh off his efforts, or I stomp off in a huff and then go back to what I was doing in the first place. I feel bad for him.....I'm not easy to contain when I'm in a hypo/manic state.

I once was terribly manic and drove my car the wrong way through a crowd of students. I was stopped by a policeman, who reported the incident to my principal after he found out I was a teacher. I was called in to see the principal the next day. When I explained that I had a mood disorder and that I was not myself, he suggested that I simply not get into my car at times like those. The moral of the story is that one must be aware of one's mood at all times and act accordingly. Easier said than done, I know. In your case, perhaps you should have chosen not to do the presentation, or at least had the others do the actual presenting and allow you to be on the sidelines.

Thank you for sharing this incident Woolly.

I was doing all those stuff before the actual presentation.
The presentation; I actually nailed it. I was so funny and interactive, although took more time than I should, I think my friends would prefer me to go on and on because GOD, they kinda froze on their part

I had trouble before and after, not during.

One of my friends thought I was on drugs especially when I told him I slept for 1.5 hours at night while working all day before that.
I was also flirting with a girl that I know is taken, she said "omg, what you are on ?", I went on to another group of people because she bored me right away.

While it's all fun when I'm in the moment. when I come 'down' from it, I kinda feel like I shouldn't have done half of the stuff I did
I didn't really hurt anyone, but..
I guess it's fine .

What have you found to be the most useful way to "prepare" others ? or somehow let them know ?
Is there a passage between 'normal' and 'manic' where u have awareness and u kinda know it's elevating so you .. I don't know, tell others to not pay attention to you, or ..
You know what I mean ?

Just be yourself and if they don't like it, they can kiss your ***. You can't help the fact that you're hypomanic. If they can't handle you, then they were never friends to begin with.
Thanks for this!
