So, I FINALLY got an appointment to see a new pdoc. Only stipulation is that I have to get off clonazepam (they said they'd taper me) because in their practice they don't prescribe benzos. She asked if I was okay with that. I said I was okay with it as long as they offer an alternative (and I don't have a choice anyway. There's zero pdoc's around here accepting new patients).

So, my inquiry is, what are these benzo alternatives? I know about buspar, and was put on that at one time, but it made me really sick and pukey.

Others?

Because I'm NOT going on an AD.

When I saw a pdoc that didn't prescribe benzos, she gave me hydroxyzine.

Beta blockers include drugs such as propranolol (Inderal) and atenolol (Tenormin). These are quite popular too for anxiety.

My pdoc told me seroquel xr can be prescribed offlabel - 50-100mg - for anxiety (secondary for people who have GAD like me). You'd have to speak to your pdoc about that one though.

Propranolol lol

They prescribed that to me in February to kill my sexual urges. I never took it. That and some mirtazapine when I was clearly manic. Not sure if it affects women's sex drive.

I was on propranolol for awhile. It didn't really do anything.

I'm supposed to be on seroquel right now, but it was making mey gain weight, so I've weaned down to 50mg, BUT when I was on 300mg it did help a lot with my anxiety. But it had some unfortunate side effects.

I'm stressed because I'm already anxious and paranoid. The only thing helping is my clonzepam.

And benzo withdrawal right now... last stress I need. Even with a taper I'm sure it's going to feel terrible.

I'm so not in a good place right now.

I'm glad to have a pdoc appointment finally... but I already don't like her. They want me off clonazepam. Fine. I'll be off it by my appointment next month.

offthevalley - Did that help?

Hallie - Does the gapentin (or however you spell it!) help you?

Guess I'll just have to see what this new doctor (who I already am skeptical about...lol!) has to offer.

I also take gabapentin (but not specifically for anxiety) and hydroxyzine. The gabapentin doesn't help me much but the hydroxyzine does help to an extent. There's also Valerian. That can be a little uncomfortable for me but it does exist.

I'm new to bipolar but not new to mental problems (extreme depression and anxiety). This is what I've learned, if they take you off something that they know is working for you, then they have to find you something to replace it with. Period. It might be a trial and error for awhile but they had better be on speed dial until they find a replacement. I've known people who get off something because their doctor doesn't like a particular drug and it's caused major consequences. Don't mess around with it! Good Luck!
Thanks for this!

I don't understand why they want me off it? I'm not abusing it. I've been averaging 2mg a day (prescribed by old doctor 4mg). I don't want to go off it.

I wasn't abusing mine either. A growing number of pdocs and nurses don't want to prescribe it anymore because each prescription has to be reported.

ETA: and if they write a lot of Rx for benzos they get investigated by the govt.

Maybe because if you're on it for too long it can cause addiction or something even if it's at a lower dose you might get a tolerance to it? Dunno.

I read elsewhere of someone using OTC Dramamine. That may help coming off Klonopin. Also, gabapentin did help coming off Klonopin a couple of times for me. It just doesn't do much for anxiety on its own for me. And hydroxyzine (vistaril). And Valerian. Others take buspar, paxil, etc.

I've never tried paxil either. I've used gabapentin, vistaril, Valerian, kava, and various herbs I've tried in teas (hops, catnip, etc). Some are helpful, others maybe not. I hope the op finds something helpful.

Yeah that reminds me actually - when I saw a nutritionist this was about 4 years back he highly recommended camomile tea and there was some other tea too that he said was great (drunk with no milk, and no sugar).

I couldn't stomach the taste for long enough. It made me want to gag.
Thanks for this!

Glad to see you got hooked up with a pdoc, sorry she wont go the benzo route. Mine would like me to take more Buspirone HCL and less Xanax, so I guess that is one alternative.

My personal experience getting off the benzos was the best thing that could of happened.. I thought I was fine but those klonopins do have some unknown effects for me at least.... 4mg a day to 0 cold turkey... Withdrawal was pure pure hell for me... Just being honest
