OMG I feel so crappy right now. My doc is taking me off of Lamotrigine in preparation for ECT and I'm so depressed it was all I could do to go have a bath and wash my hair. I was overwhelmed. And doing this is hard too :-(

Anyone know how long this will last?

Lisa

It seems like they say it takes two weeks for most meds to be sufficiently filtered out of the body.
Stopping meds is always rough. Stay strong, it'll get better.

I'm sorry to hear that it's having this effect. It's known to be effective for bipolar depression so the drop in your mood makes unfortunate sense.

I've only ever dropped then stopped lamatrogine when I switched to epilim, and my mood was pretty elevated at the time.

I hope that as you start the ect things may start to stabilise for you soon.

Hang in there

I'm sorry you have to go through that. I had to stop my antidepressant to go on an MAOI several years ago and it was very difficult to do. I never got to the point that my body was ok without the AD (and maybe it wouldn't have been since I did need it but couldn't get an effective dose, hence the MAOI), I wound up IP to start the MAOI about a week sooner than planned, but that was mostly because I couldn't function at work any longer. I could have made it another week without work. Do you know how long until you start ECT? I never knew that they took you off meds before doing that. I don't know much about it but that surprised me.

Are you completely off it, or still tapering? When I went off it the hardest part was when I got down to 50 or 25mg. It was horrible for three days, but that was all, and then I was off and felt fine (though I did feel overall crappy the whole experience).

Hope you feel better soon!

I didn't have any trouble when I went off it cold turkey.

Can you ask your Pdoc for a slower taper schedule?

Bad bad bad idea to d/c suddenly. You're lucky!

I was on relatively low dose to begin with of 175 mg. I'm very sensitive to drugs and usually take lower doses. ie) 600 mg of Lithium was too much for me and I had a significant tremor.

My doc wanted me to drop down to 100 mg right away. I'm super depressed, really groggy and I just feel like crap. Maybe it's a coincidence and this is just part of my depression but it seems like I went from low to very, very low as soon as my meds were reduced.

I read that Lamotrigine is an anti-convulsant so that's likely why I have to go off of it. He wants to take me off of it entirely as well as my lithium before the treatments. I'm probably looking at about 6-8 weeks before I can start treatments. Apparently there is quite a wait list.

Thank you all for your support.

I hope things settle for you. It is going to be tough, and no I have no idea how tough, because I have been on 400mg for quite a while. I hope I never have to get off it.

Try to focus on the goal, which is for you getting ready for the ECT which hopefully is the answer you have been looking for. It may also reduce or even delete your need for medications all together. It's a horrible saying but short term pain for long term gain.

Whoever made up that saying didn't have a MI..

It took me about 2-3 weeks to feel better coming off of it.
