Don't trust them. My 22 month old got a hold of my Abilify which was inadvertently left out. She managed to get in out of a ziplock bag, open the child proof cap, dump out the whole bottle, and take (we think) one 30 MG pill. According to both poison control and the doctor at the hospital, she will be okay and can be observed at home. She is extremely lethargic though and we were told she could be like this for up to three days. Mamas of young kiddos, might I suggest a lock box for your meds? I am most certainly getting one. Scary stuff!!!

We keep all of our meds, even over-the-counter, in a locked box.

All my meds go on a high shelf in a closed pantry. I wouldn't necessarily leave your meds out where kids can manage to reach them.. If there's a will there is always a way

OMG, that had to be so scary! I'm so sorry that happened. I'm glad you found her and that she only took one. Saying prayers for her and you.

How frightening! I am relieved she only took one. Gosh massive to you all.

I am very unimpressed with childproof locks caps too. The amount of times I have put meds in my handbag from the chemist and by the time I got home they were open and spread throughout my bag is annoying. You'd think I'd learn.

This is a good reminder for me. I don't have kids or inside pets so my meds are extremely easily accessible. I should remedy that.

Woah!

That's a scary experience. I'm so sorry your child went through this and for the emotional anguish it may have caused you too.

It's good to get this info out there.

So glad to hear she's going to be okay. It's amazing what kids can get in to. Thanks to my son (now adult) I've learned there is no such things as childproof.

My parents kept everything under lock until we were old enough to know better and I still figured out how to get into it.

It was most certaintly an accident. Ours are kept in a high cabinet with child proof locks. I don't even trust that anymore. My seven year old knows how to work the child proof cabinet locks now anyway. I'm not generally a careless person. I guess I am just shocked she was able to so easily work a child proof cap.

STILL lethargic...but much, much better. It did not help that she also has an upper respitory infection (poor baby). Based on today, I'd say she should be back to herself tomorrow. This was the scariest thing I have been through with any of my three kids! Thank you for your concern!

Poor baby. Medical stuff with little ones is so terrifying. My 4 year old niece was digging through a drawer last month to find beads and things to glue to a picture and pulled out a rapid-release tylenol. She asked what it was and I said medicine and threw it down the sink (sorry water supply). I was so glad that she found it and not her 22 month sister and that she had the knowledge to ask instead of messing with it. The next day she brought another to my sister. The drawer was in a desk that was my sister's and when my niece got into art and doing worksheets and things it was made more or less hers and the pills must have been caught in the very back crack of the drawer. So scary that they were there and I know my sister carefully cleaned things out but kids find anything they aren't supposed to it seems.
