I'm on medicaid and doctors don't want to take me because of it. I'm having trouble finding a doctor. Does anyone else have that problem?

Heard of medicaid, but I must be stupid because I do not know what that means, or what has to take place to be on it? I have a sister n law on something, and she gets very cheap housing, food stamps, and who knows what else. OH She is also Bipolar, but I hear she will take drugs for the high.

Medicaid is low income government insurance through the state. It's connected with food stamps but you don't necessarily get both if you get one. It's all income based and then you can have certain assets like you can live somewhere and own a car but there are limits to how much money you can posses and that kind of thing. When you are disabled there are also programs that provide Medicaid at a cost to you if you are above the income limits.

kaitlyn, I'm on Medi-Cal (medicaid for California). I get my healthcare through a regular clinic. Some people who go to the clinic have regular insurance, some people have medicaid. You have to speak with a worker at your local county human services department and ask the worker what to do. If you don't get an answer, persist. You're in Portland...there has to be health care available for you.

I recently acquired Medi-Cal and I had to go 2 days in a row to my county office to speak with workers about how to get hooked up with a medical situation. Each visit took about 45 minutes, not really a big deal, just persistence. Now I have med refills and an appointment on Sept. 1st.

I have Medicaid and go to a mental health clinic, but that's only because I'm an established patient...if I were to have to start over, I'd have to go through the county and that is NOT a good thing. You never see the same psychiatrist twice, and there's no real continuity of care. I'm so thankful I still get to see my own pdoc.

You should be provided with a specific insurance company that will handle your billing for Medicaid. You can call them or visit their website to find a pcp that accepts your insurance. Your pcp can refer you to a specialist that also accepts medicaid providers.

ETA: That is how PA works. Your state might be different, but your case manager at the welfare office can always assist you.
