I'm trying to move. I have a puppy. The apartments I live in now I paid $300 for my puppy (nonrefundable). I am trying move. My case manager total me about the Emotional Support Animal program. If you qualify you have your mental health pdoc write you a letter saying you need a animal. Then you do not get charged the deposit.

Well I spoke with the manager from the new apartments. I told her I have a health condition that requires me to have my puppy. She asked if it was a service dog and certified? I told her no but my condition requires it and I have a note. Well I do have a note but my pdoc was vague. He did not state a reason...condition why I needed the puppy which I'm glad. I'm worried if he was too vague and if she will ask me questions. I went online and registered my puppy with the national ESA. I'm going to print it and take it with me. I go tomorrow. I just cannot pay $300 again on top of rent deposit and paying for movers. I have so much anxiety about this. I hope this lady does not turn down my application for stigma.

If this lady ask questions what should I tell her???

---take along a photo of you and the puppy. Be calm and happy--you have the loving puppy no matter what. Tell her you have a reaction to stress and that the puppy helps w that. You dont want to be in a place where you two, the Dynamic Duo are not welcome.

I'm not positive, but something is telling me it's not even legal for her to ask what condition you have or why you need it. I would say it's personal and if she keeps pushing, turn it around and ask if it's really necessary for her to know.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this. If you have a doctors note, what more does she need....presidential approval? (((Hugs)))
Thanks for this!

This is a tough one...

I'm a landlord. What are my rights concerning emotional support animals? | Service Dog Central
Quote:
landlords are generally permitted to require a letter from the tenant's doctor explaining the tenant is disabled by mental illness and how the emotional support animal is expected to mitigate this disability.
So based on that, I would assume your landlord has the right to inquire more about your disability since the letter your pdoc wrote was vague. Sorry.

She'll probably ask what I put in the quote above ^^^^
but you don't have to tell her anything else (e.g., how much medication you take or how often you take it). In fact, I wouldn't tell her anything else.

Definitely look up laws in your state though to see what she can ask.

Then there's this:
Quote:
Under federal law, you do not have to permit emotional support animals for everyone with a mental illness, only those who are disabled and have a mental illness.
It's a sucky thing.

I don't know how to prove that you are disabled. I don't know if the pdoc letter on its own counts, or if you legitimately have to be on disability. (Probably the former, but I'm not 100% sure.)

With the new information Blue provided I would tell her you have panic attacks and anxiety and having the pet calms you as I'm sure that your pet does. Panic attacks and anxiety are not taboo in society anymore and if she has a heart, that will be enough.
Thanks for this!

I agree with ElsaMars.
I would just say its anxiety and the dog is to help you stay calm.
Like ElsaMars said anxiety is not something that freaks people
out when they hear it.

My recent IP stay there was a person with a ESA.

He had to have his dog certified, meaning basic training and no signs of aggression or dislike to anyone.

He also had a letter stating that in fact he needed his dog from his Pdoc stating Mr ______ had a mental disability and his ESA is part of his medical care.

At least that is how this gentlemen explained to me.

On a happy note the medical staff found great joy in taking her out for potty breaks as he wasn't able too.

With that letter he was able to bring her IP and he was never charged pet deposits for housing .

This sweet dog was a mutt in fact she was set to be put down before she was saved by this man.

I hope things work out for you and your fur baby ❤️

I second the above - somewhere I read that 18% of the US population suffer from anxiety disorders. With that high frequency, there is no stigma. And it is logical that you'd require an ESA for anxiety.

I went to the ESA site and they have the option to register your pet. I did that and I received the verification email. I'm able to log into there site and view my profile with my pet. I do receive disability so that would qualify me as disabled.
