Hi,
I was recently diagnosed as Bipolar I after a pretty severe manic episode. My doctor prescribed me Zyprexa, which I started taking a few months ago. My question is this: will I ever have a manic/depressive episode again? Does medication completely stop the affects of Bipolar disorder, or does it just lessen it? Thanks! |

Medication can lessen the number and the severity of mood episodes, but breakthroughs happen even with the best ones. Are you on just the Zyprexa? It's a great med but most people need more than one to control their symptoms. I'm bipolar 1 as well and it takes five drugs to keep my illness at bay. (Most people don't need quite that much though.)

I've found that medications can be very effective in managing symptoms and episodes. For me, the medicine doesn't really prevent the episodes that well, but I really feel that if I was not on medication, things would be much, much worse. Good luck on this journey, we're all here to help if you need it!

Despite a good medication(s) Bipolar can and will breakthrough at times, that is why it takes Lifestyle changes and Therapy to help yourself have as few problems with Bipolar as possible.
Medications can only do so much. Welcome to PC ![]()

Hey! Welcome to PsychCentral. I have bipolar and I am manic all the time time. I mean manic in the sense that sleeping is difficult and the daydreaming takes hold. But you know, it is managable and the meds do help. I was on Zyprexa but I suffered horrible weight gain so I had to ditch that. I am on a very low dosage of Haldol (old medication) and a couple others for side effects and sleep.
But to answer your more immediate question, the meds do their jobs but bipolar is with us and with us always. We have to find balance with therapy and our lifestyle but it does rear its ugly head, but not as bad where its not manageable. Welcome and good luck! We are here for you.

It can take a while to lessen the symptoms of your episodes. They wont completely go away. It can take weeks for medication to kick it. Honestly I never knew how bad I was until I ran out of one of my meds and went back to square 1. My body is now adjusting to them again so I still feel a little unstable.
